Also, the weather has been scary.

Further down the scale, Big Dog is good news. PN's landlord's fence doesn't seem a big issue. Cooking utensils and ovens - not really my thing, I'm afraid.

Do you not like eating, then? Or do you like eating, but someone else does the hot and messy bits?

Glad you had a good break, and the "marginally fitter" bit sounds a result over Christmas!

Someone shared 101 handy household hints on my facebook timeline. It's here:
    http://www.glamumous.co.uk/2013/03/101-household-tips-for-every-room-in.html?m=1

There is some good stuff there, I saw the idea of laying a toaster on its side for cheese on toast and I just gave it a go. It's brilliant, but:
    a) you need to empty the crumb drawer first or the contents of that tip back in, burn, fill the house with smoke and set the alarms and dogs off.
    b) you need to manually end the toasting or it pops and catapults cheese and toast four feet across the kitchen.

I did see the funny side but there is now melted cheese solidified again on my kitchen floor :rotfl:

  • So far more hassle and grief than doing it under the grill, then?

The toaster wirework touches the bread on both sides without cheese being added - the cheese would be stuck to the wirework once added.

Also, won't the cheese run the risk of running off the edge of the toast, directly onto the red hot toaster heating wires? Thus causing smell, smoke, potentially a fire - and a ruined toaster as the cheese would be irretrievable and would smoke/smell every time you then used the toaster?

You can actually make toast, then do the cheese melting bit in about 20-30 seconds in the microwave and the toast still stays crisp enough.

I am going to cut out the middle man of toast and just fill my toaster with grated cheese when I get home. What can possibly go wrong?
