So following that line of argument, butchers are murderers and ought to be imprisoned? Or is it ok to kill an animal as long as it's not a fluffy household pet?

Its ok to kill an animal when its done humanely and for a good reason.

Food, medical research, disease, unsolveable behaviour problems and overpopulation are good reasons.

Its not about seeing animals as equal to humans, and I've no idea why these discussions always go down that road. Its about acknowledging that animals are capable of feeling and of suffering, that humans are capable of treating them properly and that we have a responsibility to do so.

    No-one's arguing with that.

Someone earlier on was saying (I think) that a dog's life is equal to that of a child's which I found absolutely absurd.

Justice wasn't done in the courts but surely these scumbags will be known to local people.
Chuck Norris can kill two stones with one birdThe only time Chuck Norris was wrong was when he thought he had made a mistakeChuck Norris puts the "laughter" in "manslaughter".I've started running again, after several injuries had forced me to stop

Well, somebody always says that, then somebody argues, and the whole thing turns into child vs animal and becomes completely ridiculous and unproductive.

Bottom line is sentencing for animal related crimes is minor. This seems a mistake since we know animal cruelty often precursors or co-exists with people related crime. Unfortunately some of the most notorious criminals.. especially serial killers... began their offending against animals and of course this was largely unchallenged by society.

To be fair, the notorious murderers you talk about didn't lock animals in a room and starve them because they didn't know what to do.They done other things and gained pleasure from doing so.So,the relation between murder or psychopathic murderers and the harming of animals isn't as simple as most people see it (bugbear of mine)-there are usually other indicators too but that's another subject!

Neglect equalling possible future neglect of animal or human more likely

Welcome back btw, haven't seen you for ages

And yes, of course there are animal welfare regulations in the meat industry, I'm just wondering where you draw the line between animals we can kill and eat and animals whose lives have the same value as human beings.

You can't say a dog's life is the same value as a child, unless you happen to be a Jain monk and you believe ALL life has equal value.

I'm not a jain monk but I value all animal life equally (including humans). We do the best we can within the situations we are in.

    It is purely arrogance making people think they are better than any other species on this planet. I know I'm repeating myself yet again, but;

Animals evolved before and beside us, not for us.

Clearly you've never had the joy of caring for a dog as a companion in the way others have. Animals (domesticated pet) are like children in the way that they look to us for comfort, warmth, food, safety, etc. And they give love back tenfold when loved.

How can you find it absurd when companion animals (and sometimes animals in general) can provide the same sort of relationship a parent has with their child.

There is no inherent proof we are better than other species. It is merely our own arrogance and delusions of grandeur that allow us to think it is ok to see non-human animals as lower.

I'm sure if some alien species came to this planet and thought themselves higher than the human species you wouldn't be to pleased. When one thinks themselves better than another it leads way to all sorts of abuse - particularly the 'might is right' ideology wherein because of the notion that the human is mightier, then anything they do to animals is 'right'. It happened with black humans being treated as inferior to white humans. Male superior to female. Rich superior to poor. And most other human social injustices are due to one group feeling superior to the other and thus thinking their superiority gives them the right to do as they wish to the inferior ones. If more humans looked at animals as equals I reckon there would be a lot less abuse.

what a horrible crime, but abit ironic that some people are getting outraged about it but in the same breath saying they would lock the perpatrators up and starve them to death.....um ok that sorta cancels out your outrage does it not?

I think a custodial sentence would of been more appropriate and act as a deterrant to others.

The is something seriously wrong with the sentences handed out in this country that's for sure.

It is truly beyond comprehension how they could go to sleep at night after eating a takeaway in THE NEXT ROOM !! to where those poor dogs were slowly dying.Even if they had just dumped them in the next village they would have stood a much better chance at life.

What the hell is the matter with any human being who can do that and know for sure just how much they would be suffering.

Sometimes i would love to be in a country where a punishment fitted the crime.I could cheerfully lock them in a room and leave them for at least a month, until they knew just how much it hurts to die like that.
