Ah, how we humans differ! I had a lot to do with a couple of design and R&D companies in my teens and early twenties, before Apple really got into the market very much. They were all Mac based, and not just for the pretty streamlined look of the products, but for the innovative features. This was way before I could even afford an iPod so being allowed to play with the first Macbook Air when it came out, and these huge 32inch screens with no tower, and wireless mouse & keyboards... just fab. Love the menu's and the different style of doing things. I think Apple excel(led - RIP Steve Jobs) at the things that Microsoft just fail at. Even looking at XBox1 vs PS4 shows me how lacking Microsoft are. They can't keep up. Windows 8 is a calamitous attempt to integrate tablets and computers and for me it just doesn't work. I've never found it so difficult to FIND things in all my life! It makes me feel out of my depth with technology and that is a new and unfamiliar feeling that I personally would like to blame on them, and not me getting out of touch at 28 years old!

I don't really care what they look like, pretty as it is, it does what I want it to do in a way I can understand easily! Flicking around screens that look like a tablet but don't work as well as one just does my brain in! Integrated Facetime so I can talk to my mum same as with my phone is awesome too. It's about £680 for the one I want. So a couple hundred £'s more if that, for something I will enjoy using, rather than something I will regret every time I turn it on! Also, I cannot believe they dare to charge £8.99 a month, or £219 outright to put Office on my PC!

Sorry for that mini rant. I just have had dealings with two laptops on Windows & in the last couple of weeks and got so frustrated at how difficult they have made such simple tasks!

I've had too much coffee ;)

I grew up with macs, the towers, the all in one (massive!) computer and some of the later all in one (looks like it should be on the tardis) computers. Macs are very good for their screens and for the accuracy you can have. But I hate the different screens they have, you might find the 8 version annoying but think of poor me when I'm demo-ing to someone and accidentally make a "gesture"-fly into a completely different screen with no way (other than a colleague to rescue me a couple of minutes later) to get back!

Or that numbers (mac excel) doesn't have as much functionality as excel. Facetime to me seems like skype, just with less people able to use it.

Also, Xbox One va PS4 doesn't seem to be a fair comparison when computer gaming tops them both hands down. With the amazing gaming (windows based) computers available, which also allow you to do what you need to, it seems to me that there is a lot to be accounted for here. Though I have to say, I would get the PS4 if I were to get either (I wouldn't computers are far superior).

I agree that the SAAS model for office is unbelievably stupid and makes me want to punch people.

Also, I think I've exhausted much of my knowledge of the subject. Sorry, as interesting as this is, I don't think I can any more contributions to this debate :o

Lol! My personal knowledge on computer gaming is the Sims ;) so I am also out! Hahaha!

Him plays, Diablo 2 & 3, Smite & HearthStone. All of which are computer based and made by Blizzard. He has never been tempted by WoW though. I just haven't the skills or brain to game in totality so I don't really play any of them. I had mini ninjas for PS3 but I got seasick playing it. Miss my PS1, Rayman & Crash Bandicoot days ;) Lol

hurrah for Jelly getting better - hope you've had a lovely rest and some great time to yourself :)

being ancient, I have played with macs before even ipods existed - we used them when I worked in a university attached to all the fancy microscopes etc because both soft and hardware was better for graphics. No idea if that is still the case as I have plumped for android in our house and use chromebooks, android tablets/phones and windows lap tops now. Not 8, although dd was bought a touchscreen laptop by her grandpa from america (cost less than my chromebook and about a quarter of the price of entry level mac) and she got windows 8 in less than a minute - on the same device dad took a few hours to get used to it- but you need a touchscreen for it to be workable I think.

DO LESS CLEANING! that is all :)
    :AA/give up smoking (done) :)

Hey Lobbyludd!! This morning my lie in was disturbed by me waking up at usual Jelly time, 6am! The cheek of it, is that she didn't wake her Nan til 7:40! Lol. I stayed in bed and dozed a bit but then got up, made toast and jam, strong coffee (did I tell you I have kicked even sweetener in my coffee & tea now?!?) and sat down with my laptop. After spending a few minutes on the forums, I decided to do more cleaning! This time my laptop. Surgical spirit, cotton buds & an eyebrow brush have left it looking and working good as new. No longer bashing hard on certain chocolate and fluff filled keys! Thats not really 'cleaning' is it.

I moved my bedroom around a bit last night, watched an old episode of the big bang theory with dinner and then started playing with YNAB. Much as others game, I budget! Lol. It is amazing how clean the place stays when it is just me. And peaceful! Jellytot is due back around 6pm, fed and bathed and in her pj's. If it is anything like last time, I will be popping her in bed within minutes of her coming through the door!

My neighbours downstairs have moved out. This is both a blessing, (3 yappy dogs, & 100+ a day cigarette habit turning Jellys bedroom into a smoke pit for over 2 years gone) and a problem, as it leaves me with no idea of who will be there next and whether they will put up with Jelly's incessant banging, jumping, throwing things onto our laminate floor etc. Maybe if I just let her do those things strategically every time there is a viewing then it will stay empty :rotfl:

And you are NOT ancient! I remember when iPods didn't exist ya know ;) I was even out of nappies and everything! You're right, they are way better for graphics, designing etc. Not that I do much of that, but ya know. I don't know what it is about Windows 8. I see the good parts of it, but you're right, it does need a touch screen, and then I think, well why not just get a tablet and a case with a bluetooth keyboard attached! Also everytime a new Windows system comes out, there are literally SO many add-ons to contend with, Norton trial, McAfee etc etc etc. I am computer savvy enough to know these are not a good thing for anyone! Apple has only been hacked once, is pretty much 99% virus free, the browsers are so much safer... And there is none of that add-on malarkey!

Still, this one will do for now. The keyboard is MUCH better and I am about to embark on the internal clean-up and defrag etc. It is still not going to last me very long, but we shall see :)

    TTFN guys! xx

Pah. Turns out my computer has been defragging itself on a Weds weekly since I set it up when I bought it in 2005!!! No wonder the poor thing is a bit tired, it's OLD! All the more reason to buy a new one when my savings mature.

I've already budgeted all of my outgoings for August. Even though £633 of the income has yet to be paid ;) lol. It has focused my mind intently. Because I haven't accounted for, medicines, toiletries, takeaways, £7.49 I owe my mum for a bottle of wine for my Pop's birthday, & ANY overspends in any category. I've got £130.02 to spend on groceries. In perspective I spent £186.06 this month. And that was GOOD. Why so tight this month you ask? What can I possibly be doing with all the money I usually fritter...?

£166.76 already into my savings for emergencies. A further £82 (child benefit) is to be saved for Jellytot. £300 always goes into the regular savings. Last month I started YNAB. And all the little pieces of money I had stored here & there got pulled into the first month to get me set up cleanly. Now I have to make that back!

I've got to buy nappies this month. Trying to figure out when the next ASDA Baby & Toddler event is. They appear to have put their prices up on nappies to £24 for 2 boxes. It is usually £20. I presume this is so they can 'reduce' it to £20 for the bargainous aforementioned event *eyeroll* - Supermarkets suck.

I have joined Kats final farewell challenge for August. 12 SFD's should be a doddle. 20-30 things to put on ebay? I'm no hoarder... I have a few things to put on. I have a few items I really ought to sell. a 22ct gold ring that has zero sentimental value to me. A citizen ecodrive solar powered charm bracelet silver watch. Costume jewellery comprising of dozens of huge teardrop shaped amethysts. A pair of £60 headphones, still in box, sealed & untouched. A couple of pairs of Clarks baby shoes. Few of the above can go on ebay, but I should make moves to try and get them away. I need this challenge to keep me on the straight & narrow for my groceries.

Anyone got any recipes they would like to share? I am open to anything especially that including several kilos of red lentils :rotfl:

I don't have to cook tonight. A mash up of leftover chinese and savoury veggie rice in the fridge will suffice.

Oh and I have done my maths. As of the end of August, I will be an average £56.40 per month better off. I lose £2250pa tax credits on childcare, which was frightening til I figured out that I actually pay all of them plus the above savings out per month on nursery. So I lose nothing and gain lots!

    I do rabbit on...

Lentil recipes are galore on Greying Pilgrims Living on next to nought thread. My favourite is the Girl called Jacks lentil burgers. I also have a fab recipe for spicy tomato and lentil soup.

I bought a humongous bag of red lentils in Tesco for £2 and we are working our way through them. Xx

Oooh I shall have to wander over. I've looked but Pilgrims thread is a bit daunting! ;)

Tomato and lentil soup sounds PERFECT! Please share!! I have many of each and tonnes of spices. I so did the same thing with the lentils ;) I also picked up a 2kg bag in Asda for £1.02 or something from the offer shelves as no one would buy! Lol
