  • To put things into perspective, the amount of money lost to benefit fraud is TINY compared to the amount of unclaimed benefits, from people being entitled to benefits but for whatever reason not claiming them.

That makes it ok then does it?

It is very hard isn't it:( It one of her parents that is doing it (they are separated)

I don't think that they are actually boasting about it or living a life of luxury but.they aren't really short of money they never seem to have much as it all goes on cigarettes/alcohol/eating out blah blah.. Well according to my friend. I barely know her parents have only ever seen them once or twice at 'parties'

She is annoyed that she is in the situation and said she wishes she never found out.

I completely agree with all the above comments about it being wrong etc as that is kind of what I was saying to her, I think if she was confident they would just be told to repay then she would do it, but she was just saying she could never forgive herself if they got into serious trouble because of her. Especially because it hasbeen going on for quite some time, well she isn't sure exactly but she has worked it out to about 2yrs-ish.

I'm glad I'm not in her shoes!

    Thanks for your thoughts :)

What has karma got to do with it, unless you are in the habit of committing crimes also?

What would you do if this relative stole from your purse each week? Benefit fraud is no different - they are stealing from the public purse that we all contribute to.

    Exactly.

I find the 'it's their life' attitude very hard to swallow. It may be their life but it's MY money!!

I'm no Daily Mail reader but I feel very strongly that the benefit system is there for the vulnerable and needy and not as a lifestyle choice. So I'd definitely report them.

P.S. Feel equally strongly about tax dodgers too.

I have no time for anyone, person or company who tries to cheat the system. We all pay tax in one form or another so they are stealing from you and I.

But!!! wow its a tough one! I understand that being a close relative they would see first hand the effects. But theft is still theft.

Can they not talk to them, give them an ultimatum. Stop or else type ???

I 100 % believe in Karma that is why she has to do something. To ignore it would be just as bad as doing it yourself.

she could never forgive herself if they got into serious trouble because of her
But the longer it goes on, the more trouble she is likely to be in, so she would almost do her a favour by reporting her now before it does, that is unless she accepts to stop it herself.

In the end, if you are prepared to do the crime, you should be prepared to face the consequences. The longer it goes, the higher the chances of getting caught any way.

Benefit scrounging at its worst when people use their "extra money" to buy fags, alcohol, 50" TV's, you know, those essential things in life....

If they do have to pay anything back, they they can always do a detox, give up the fags and the booze! Totally makes me angry that we are funding their (and many other people's) lifestyles.

I've seen Penalties calculations & they are not at all pretty. The longer, the higher the odds of criminal conviction & possible jail - better to shop fast as a long term kindness.

The sort that puts a truck through family relations for decades, but is still the right thing.
