I know a headteacher who retired from running a very big, very successful secondary school when she reached 60 in order to move into advisory work. She answered her door one day to find two children from the village primary school holding a box - "We're giving out the food we collected for Harvest Festival to the local pensioners" - one of the few times in her life she was actually speechless!0

This made me laugh out loud. At 59 in a few days I feel her pain.. . .I did not speak out
Then they came for me
And there was no one left
To speak out for me..

I hated 30 and 40 but was ok with 50. I have three ages - my real age, my ideal age (25) and my mental age (15).
I was talking to someone about how fast kids grow up and realised that in 35 years (age of my eldest), I will be 91.:eek:0 -
Sorry I haven't read all the posts but title reminds me of a thread I saw the other week. OP was deliberating how they'd manage with MIL over Christmas, transport, keeping her entertained, doing their share etc. All posters assumed we were talking about a white-haired granny then turned out she was late 40s!

Not quite as simple as I described but it did give me a wake up call!0 -
I don't feel particularly old at 61 . Try to keep up with quite a bit of technology , do modern jive dancing and read what's going on in the world etc . We have friends who've been saying for years that they're old and tired , they're 63 now . I think it's a state of mind but think reasonable health does help to keep a person active longer . Old will be when I can't do the things I want to anymore , eg go on holiday, dance etc. Maybe I'll be lucky and get to about 80 , let my roots grow and wear sensible clothes . Since none of us know if we'll survive to old age I'll try and do as much as I can now .0

I think when people have a young outlook on life, are active and really sharp minded they can appear way younger than they actually are. 'Old' to me is when people get stuck in the same routine week in and week out, don't grab life by the horns or make the most of it, regardless of their actual age.The best day of your life is the one on which you decide your life is your own, no apologies or excuses. No one to lean on, rely on or blame. The gift is yours - it is an amazing journey - and you alone are responsible for the quality of it. This is the day your life really begins.0

My hairdresser was telling me about someone she knows.
This woman's cousin was visiting the UK after 40 years in Australia, and wanted to meet up, and suggested a Tuesday afternoon. 'Oh no,' said the woman, I can't do Tuesday afternoon, I always go up the High Street on Tuesday afternoons to buy my sausages.'
Now that is stuck in a routine! Hope I never get as bad as that.Early retired - 18th December 2014

I used to work with old people and the obsession with routine freaked me out. I used to see people turn down wonderful social events or treats because they clashed with the normal time they went to the shops or had lunch. Their routine left them living in a prison.0 -
My neighbour is 77 ,i really do not recongize her as an "old" person .0
