How old is old?

Options
Interesting to see what the perceptions are. I know when I first started work at the age of 18 and used to use our social club, anybody over about 23 fell into the 'older' category. Now as I've gone beyond 49 (though still nearer that than 50!) I don't actually feel any older than I did in my twenties sometimes.
But last week my phone rang when I was out shopping and I have the Doctor Who theme as my ring tone (and Tardis as text tone...yes I'm a bit geeky :rotfl:) As I took it out my bag people in the shop would have heard it but I wasn't prepared for the reaction of a couple of girls near me, probably around 12 years old. One looked at me, then turned to her friend and said 'I love it when old people have cool ringtones' Not sure if being connected to something cool outweighs the age thing!

Everyone over the age of 18 is old to a 12 year old! :p
I don't feel my age either, I'm 36. It staggers me sometimes, when I think about it. I still don't know what I want to do when I grow up! My mum turned 69 yesterday and she told me she doesn't feel any older than she did at 40. Another 4 years and we'll be twins...lol

My husband and I got up from a table and went to the bar to pay for a meal we had just had.

Group of youngsters at the side of us looking for a table, 'theres one, where that old couple have just left' I looked over and it was the table we had just vacated ...... Made me think, I will tell you lol
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.
  • You're just an uninteresting and decrepid old person to a twelve year old. As everybody is who's over the age of 25. I imagine you're not of a dissimilar age to her grandmother. When you don't think of yourself as particularly aged that's rather sobering.

I'm 30 next year, I have no idea how that happened when I still feel about 17. To the younger students on my uni course though, I know I'm definitely lumped with 'the oldies'.

My parents and grandparents inform that they all feel about 17 too and are equally confused about where the time goes! I don't know that we ever really come to terms with how fast we age and how little time we actually get before we pop our clogs.

Over 80 is 'old' to me. But then, that's saying 79 isn't LOL. So it's a funny question. I think for example that any age under 70 is too young to die. But I guess someone who is 20 years older than me (so about 69) would say more like any age under 90 is too young to die! :D

    It's all relative.

I'm constantly amazed that I'm married with a mortgage and 2 kids.
    Surely that's not right for a 12 year old, oh that's right I'm 37.

It's so weird isn't it, when you don't feel your age at ALL? :o I still feel 18-21 in my mind.

    I FEEL 15-16 maximum.

    I am 44.

How I got bought a house, married, divorced, started my business, I do not know. I'm still waiting for Dad to tell me it's time to get up.

Which he did, bless him, even though my alarm was set. :)

I have to admit that when DD was a baby, I was in town and someone said about "the lady needs to come through"

    I stepped aside. :rotfl:

    Yes, I was the "lady".

For me I find that it seems to be about peoples attitudes - I found out not long ago that one of the women on the same pub quiz team as me is 80, I'd assumed she was in her late 60's as she dresses 'younger' than I'd expect an 80 year old and doesn't come across as old. Equally my 67 year old Aunt is old to me as her atttitude and dress sense makes her seem older than her years.

I really do believe age is a state of mind...... Go to any reunion and some people will seem to be little different to when they were at school or uni and others will seem to be "old".
