With that in mind, I was thinking of starting a little spin off thread where we could all list our favourite products for 2013. Eg, fave cleanser, fave toner, fave shampoo etc. Then all the HGs would be in one place and then end of next year we do the same to see if they are the same or we've found better products.

It may have already been done before, I don't know if there's a thread like that.
What does everyone think? I don't want to start it if nobody is interested. Be honest. It wouldn't be an ongoing thread like this, just an annual one.

+1 for this! My ultimate aim is to use up all the products I have and whittle down my stash to the products that really work, so that using them up isn't a chore. I try things and chuck them into the stash without really having used them properly and never really assess whether they work for me. I love the idea of a favourites list! I'm really curious about what other people use and why it's their favourite… plus I've been reading back through the thread and the comments on products are more truthful than any magazine review I've ever read.

Just the nail polish to go and my stash list will be finished. Over 200 products so far, please tell me I'm not the only one… :rotfl:

Emsjune78 - Do you have any friends/neighbours who have had their bathrooms done in the last year or so, perhaps you could ask who they used, if they were happy etc. We need a new CH boiler, and having only been in this area 2 years were uncertain who to get to quote, I asked a neighbour who has been around for ever, and he gave us the name of the firm that did theirs, highly recommended by him and we were impressed when the owner came to inspect, we left it too late to get it done before the winter, but hopefully he will be signed up for the spring.


ValM - the basin in my bathroom keeps getting clogged up, it is a devil to get at, so far I get by using washing soda and boiling water every couple of weeks, and if I forget I pick up of bottle of some noxious stuff from Aldi or the like, I blame my cream and balm cleansers as I have only recently started using bar soaps again.


This place has certainly helped me to stop buying things on a whim, because I am tired or down or just because it is a bargain, with the exception of the TSV's I nearly always do "the 2 sleeps thing" before I buy anything now. I also enjoy other people's reviews and the heads-up for bargains for my HG products or things I have listed as wanting to try. Plus of course the general chit-chat, support and on-line friendship. I think a bit of "stash envy" is inevitable for some, but by concentrating on what we have first it gets less (for me anyway).


No flippin smilies since laptop updated to IE 11!!!!!!! Must try Opera or something.

Clarins brightening toner - have another in my stash but my skin is in a poor state at the minute so am having a rest from it until it improves.

Colgate max white toothpaste - WMBA on offer - super minty and fresh.

Boots extract cranberry shower gel - was pleasantly surprised by this - WMBA if shower gel stash ever reaches a managable size.

Champneys distant shores body wash and butter - WNBA although it smelled lovely in the pack when I applied it left an unpleasant plastic aroma. Sadly I have more of this in the stash.

Finally ladies, a subject close to our hearts but slightly OT, my bathroom is not a place I like to wallow in the bath at the moment as I eye up the plain tiles and rather past it, although not gaudy, bathroom decor - I'm setting my sights on getting a new bathroom but don't know where to start and OH is not at all DIY ish so I'm thinking we buy everything we need and get someone to fit it etc, no great remodelling required as its a fairly small room and everything makes sense where it currently is. I'm assuming this option would be rather a lot cheaper than getting someone like B&Q to do the whole lot? Any advice would be gratefully received. I'd definitely get through my bath products quicker if I had a lovely bathroom in which to enjoy them :j:j:j

DH's cousin is a plumber and does the whole bathroom fitting thing right down to tiling etc and he regularly fits products that people have bought themselves. If you are struggling to find someone your local plumbers merchants or builders merchants may be able to recommend someone.

No it's not just you. My list is back up to over 500 and that does not include nail varnish or make up, mine is bath and body products anything that smells nice I am a sucker for. I keep promising myself no more but for some strange reason I just can't seem to help myself. I think that I should promise not to buy anything else but this does not work for me. I have aims but I am keeping them to myself for now. I am going to base mine round money not sure which yet, I quite like someone's post of putting money in a jar every time you use something up.

I am not going to post my list again as it is very out dated and I can't keep up with the list on this thread and my own list, so I am going to transfer it onto a spreadsheet and track it that way. If I'm really honest after the judgements made on the frugal blog I don't want to list my stuff anymore.

Clutter free I really like the idea of a holy grail list.

I spent a few hour yesterday sorting stuff out and re-organising things and trying to find new places to put it. My empty hat boxes have come in very useful.

Ta da! Finally got there. I do love a list but this was a real chore! 362 products total in the final count, some of which I've managed to ditch (mostly nail polish) as they were past their best, so I have 338 to work my way through. Have multicoloured nails from checking whether nail polishes were worth keeping or not. That will be fun when I pop to Tesco shortly

Things I'm not counting: Soaps - I don't have too many of these and keep them in a little jar on the bathroom counter so they generally get used up. Shampoo, conditioner and deodorant - I go through these regularly enough that there isn't really a stash, just what I currently use. Although I have included some shampoo and conditioner miniatures on the list to remind me to take them to the gym to use up. I've had some of them for donkeys years. Finally, perfumes - I only really ever have 2 or 3 bottles on the go and tend to use up any samples or freebies as soon as I get them. Learned my lesson there after realising that very expensive perfumes had gone bad whilst I used up cheapies for normal wear. I do it the opposite way around now and never let a nice perfume stay in the drawer unused.

My plan of action is (based on advice from the thread) to tackle the single use products first (e.g. skincare samples and bath bombs) then the stuff that's almost used, half used etc. before I open anything new. I'm going to take the smallest bottles of shampoo and conditioner to the gym and all of the small body lotions, as I'm more likely to take the time to use them up after I come out of the shower there.

I feel a bit sad that some of the more expensive bits I've treated myself to over the years were set aside, whilst I've tried to use up boring bits. Many have languished in the stash and aren't as nice/smelly as they were. Also realised that quite a lot of the stuff I struggle to use up is gifted (lots of new sanctuary and soap and glory this christmas) so perhaps I'll need to be a bit more vocal about products I enjoy using Not that these things aren't nice but I'm sure it's hard for anyone to use 2 kilos of the same body cream without getting sick of it!

Well done Cakeadoodle on your list. I found I needed to do that as my first step too because then I get the satisfaction of crossing off products as they are used.
I'm only six weeks in and have barely made a dent but it took years to build up my stash so it's going to take time.

I've only been part of this group for six weeks and they are a lovely bunch, not at all judgemental which, IMHO, is a rare and lovely thing on a forum.

Hi everyone, loving the stash list cakeadoodle, you were right about having a lot of body lotions! :rotfl: I have worked out that I will only UU a body lotion if it is in the bathroom for straight after my shower. If I wait until I go through to my bedroom I will have forgotten!

Sounds like there are a lot of lovely Ins from Santa and the sales, and I have Ins to declare as well.

Soap & Glory Yule Monty set = 9 Ins, at least the shower gel isn't Clean on Me this time

Travel shower gel and body lotion from my gran from a miscellaneous brand

So that makes 13 ins, sigh, although I will still have a significant reduction in the stash by the end of the year.

I was thinking of buying Snow Fairy or Boots Extracts stuff in the sales but think I'll need to postpone that for another year now!
