clippy_girl wrote: »hello, basically if you earn over the tax threshold in job one then you will pay 20% tax on your mystery shopping earnings. however you can deduct mileage, printing, parking etc.. from your total so you wont pay tax on all of it. generally i pay about 10% of the total earnings in tax once i have taken off the allowed expenses.
as long as you earn under around £5k (i think not sure!) from job two, you can apply to hmrc for a ni exemption cert so you dont need to pay ni on the mystery shopping income (its free).
you do need to do a tax return but as long as you keep records (preferably on a spreadsheet) it takes about 10 minutes to do if you dont do that many jobs. i have a spreadsheet that calculates tax so i know how much it is but it will tell you when you do the tax return anyway. i can send it to you if you like.
there is lots more info on this and other stuff to get started (inc company lists) on the mystery shopping thread on up your income xx
Clippy - Thank you so much for all of your help! That has answered everything I was puzzling over this morning! Yes please to the spreadsheet! I shall pm you x

Well now Hobbitses.. I have read many many pages... seems like there is a health kick to shame me happening on my own pages...eek!
So... from the top I have a few questions that stood out. This does not mean I don't love everyone else but just wanted to ask some questions if anything to amuse and to clarify some points....- Thrifty - your kitchen looks amazing! I didn't say this before but this is the best way to make a home pretty without spending loads of money - well done!
- TennisFanatic - why do you feel lonely and numb honey - I know this comment you made was a while ago but I wondered at the the use of the word numb - are you okay?
- CEW - YOU HAVE CHICKENS!!! My neighbours here in NI have chickens and the eggs are amazing and as a vegan I would eat them purely because I know they are running around outside - the eggs I mean not the chickens. However may I ask how many people you are buying for this year that £500 was spent on gifts - or was this for the entirety of Christmas..?
- Traveller - how did the cow pat cake come out? And did you make a super duper inspirational spreadsheet with pictures.
- Fyggy - are you in NI at the moment??
- Abundant - have you had the chat yet? It's been nearly a week now I think since you first wrote that it was playing on your mind and I have seen since that you were planning on it...?
- SplodgeTheFirst - warhammer? Explain please for NSK the Unknowledagble. Why is it expensive..?
- KittyBoo - are you doing any more "hoarder-esque" clear outs? And you should ask your boys for the bra just to see what they say. I got my Ma some knickers... she has 15 new pairs now...Lol! Although boys are different - get a vouchers from them perhaps for the bra store of choice...
- TipToesDB.. I hate the fact that you are looked upon as being able or are expected to buy gifts from neices and nephews because you don't have children. I think this is rather rude to be honest of other people. I could get on my high horse here as people decide to not have children for a reason, or just don't have them at all for other reasons... this should NEVER be an excuse for family to assume their children should be given expensive gifts because they themselves can't save properly throughout the year and think you have nothing better to spend your money on.. honestly...Grrr! Anyway how is the puddy-tat today? I hated leaving my scrabby tabby in London but apparently she has settled into life without me on the sofa with my landlady!
- Fmess... I can understand that you would not want to go hardcore as it is definitely not for eveyone. I think if you have cut back as much as you can there is only one thing you can do - watch out for the basic over-spending days where the food splurges catch you out as they do with many of us!! I like the idea of annual savings pot especially for car maintanence etc and things that are definitly going to crop up again and again...
- PurpleJay - are you sure that curry didn't cause the damage in your poor recovering body the other day?? WHen you say M wants an iPad is he going to get one??... Anyone else got little people wanting expensive electronic goods this year? What do you say to them - go out and work for it perhaps...?
- Pheonix - is it payday for you yet..?
- Siouxsie...GUTTED about that CC! Whats the plan.. If I am write I think you might be able to crack this and clear it all the same.. then crack down to as much mystery shopping as you can..
- MrsGSR - you make me wanting stickers and a wall planner..;- )
- Shyspender... starting at 0500 means getting up at what time..? Are you coming home for a nap..? Is this a new shift pattern or new shifts..?
- BEX296 - well done to your OH on the job and I can see how you SHOULD accept his offer of clearing your debt and treating it as one. He probably sees you stressing about it and sees you being released from this as more important than what money it would cost him. Remember you will be pooling your resources to a certain degree soon as Mr&MRS so why not do it now, cleat the debt and poor everything into the wedding and marriage and focus on what you will do for work in 2015 and living on a low income rather than having the extra worry of debts.. let him help you -there is no shame in accepting help from the man who wants to marry you!!
- Clippy / Splodge / Fmess - someone tell me why this particular diet is so good.. so much chitter chatter about it!
So I may have found a house. £350 a month sharing with a man - but it is only for 10 months. Close to everything I need, same area for transport to work, secure underground parking for the bike with no extra cost, Dorothy the Mog is welcome and the room isn't as small as I would have expected. There will be a new bed in there and a TV with ample storage for things I can't bare to part with.... so fingers crossed all is okay when I go back to secure a move at the end of February. I won't be too far from where I am not so hopefully I might be able to bribe my friend and her husband to drive my belongings over there as they are getting my double bed....#sob... I need rid of it anyway and they are a good cause....
Ah yes I was treated to a pair of new boots today from my lovely Pa.. not sure how I will get them home though as my bag is almost stuffed full....
That's the extent of my exciting news.....
Off to my childhood bed.. My brother has changed my room around and I usually rely on my feet sticking out the end but as he has wedged it into a new part of my room I might be sleeping with my knees around my neck..
Good Night all...“Nothing in this world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Exactamundo! My payslip was published today and I can clear the card balance (phew!), pay my DDs and get through January with £3.84 to spare! Gutted cos that extra £1000 was to go towards my loan. However, I have a new computer, it'll be all paid off and I'll get through January (traditionally a difficult financial month) and be able to eat! I'm using this setback to visualise a future where I have no debt and I can afford to buy a new MacBook Air every month
I love your stories from home Kat. The house sounds a lovely, cosy safe place to be (even if your dad does hog the heat). How long are you staying for?
So, as planned, another SFD today. Just spent the day at work so really really nothing interesting to report (except my payslip being published, but I guess that's only exciting for me!!).
Goodnight everyone. Catch up again tomorrow :wave:0 -
Oh... kinda related to this but thought people might like to know...
our local tescimos had a sign up today and they have managed to provide 6331 meals for the food bank.
:j
Knowing that I contributed to this made me feel quite warm and fuzzy so thought I would share the feeling around. Thanks NSK for inspiring me to think of donating food to those in need.Mortgage: £0/£80,329.91

NSK Starting at 0500 means crashing out of bed at 04:20 when the alarm goes off, quick cat's lick and a promise, stumble around trying to find a clean shirt and getting two legs into two trouser holes without falling over. Then trying to remember to put my lunch into a bag at the same time as trying to persuade my hair to lie flat and not stick up like the bedtime gorilla has left it!
It's all in the name of s*dding Turkeys:(
I work in supermarkets and for some strange reason at this time of year everyone wants Turkeys and whatever combination/orientation of them that we do. So all this week, Tues to Sat I get the pleasure of coming in at 0500 to make sure I get them all onto the lorries (not me personally, I just plan the right numbers onto the right lorries) for all those lovely peoples out there.
No naps so far, but today is day three and if it wasn't for my amazingly wonderful new OH texting me Good Morning, I would still be snuggled up in bed. She has very kindly been getting up at the same time as me each morning just to say a quick good morning and send me on my way with a smile :smileyhea
I keep planning naps because technically with the earlier starts I should be finishing by 1330. I haven't left before 1500 yet and there isn't really any sign of it changing in the next few days. 0500 start means 2100 bed so the later finishes means if I was to go home and nap, I wouldn't sleep when I went to bed.
I'm actually now waiting on orders, guzzling water for breakfast. I may treat myself to a mango and lychee green tea in a bit, after all, it is Christmas, lol

Morning All
Glad to hear you are having a relaxing time with the folks Kat.

Sorry crossed wires about the iPad. I meant that M wanted to use my ipad, the one I was using to browse on here, which I had 16 months ago. M is 7. We have been without it for a few months as he dropped it in the patio in the summer  and I couldn't afford to get it fixed. In the end I got a Groupon for the screen for £50 and paid an extra £60 for the LCD display which was much cheaper than some places. Got it done for me coming home from hospitalit is lovely to have oy back but of course M thinks so to so when I am on it, he wants it a lot of the time! He will NOT be getting one for Christmas although he does have a friend who has his own (parents old one perhaps).
I have however got him a kindle fire HD which he doesn't know about. He has been looking at the leap pad ultra which has been very well advertised this year but that seems expensive for what it is and I think he is a bit old for it anyway being so used to a proper tablet. After much shopping around, I decided on the kindle as it will be good to encourage his love of books as well as to play games on etc.
I have spent rather more this Christmas than planned as this was a big pressie and I still wanted him to have lots of parcels to open and some of the things on his list. Having said that, almost all his gifts are from us. Mum chips in to the christmas pot as she cannot buy herself. My BIL has been asked to adopt a WWF snow leopard for him as he has been desperate to do this (lots of advertising but also a good cause). "But MUM! You get rare photographs!" You get the ideaWe have got a new sledge this year for him as we would have got one anyway first sign of snow (the other one got worn through the bottom with his dad pulling him to school on it last year) and that will be a huge parcel under the tree
I have another friend for coffee this morning and shopping delivery 12-1 today. Must finish my cards... Then I am picking 2 boys up from school. Might try driving today, it isn't far and the kids are taking games and bringing work/christmas stuff home so it might be a struggle with 2 of them.
No other spends planned today all being well.
Shyspender, poor you having to get up in the middle of the night for the turkeys! I am having quorn roast for my dinner and have bought a frozen tesco finest stuffed turkey joint for M and his Dad. Total cost £9 and they will do us for Christmas Day and a couple of rounds of sandwichesI am always shocked at the price of fresh meat and how much people spend on a turkey!
Happy Thursday x'Life isn't about waiting for the storm to pass, it's about learning to dance in the rain'0 -
NSK- i decided to do the skinny rules and everyone just copied me as i am great! :rotfl::p
last year i had a session with a pt at my gym to get a new tummy programme (dont worry it was free!) in time for my holiday and he said cutting out carbs after lunch was quickest way to getting flat tummy. i googled it to find out more and came across an article about the book so got it from library. i found it easy to follow (when im in the right mindset!) and did indeed get a flat tummy within 5 weeksi think this was mostly down to no carbs after lunch and eating no non-natural sugars :A

Warhammer in essence is war with toy soliders you build and paint yourself. the issue is the kits are expensive (£15+ for 10 models) and you need a fair sized army to do much that's fun. then theres the glue, paints, scenery ... hence why i've been repainting my older models for now
in other (more pants) news my number plates were stolen last night - need to replace them stat. there goes my bonus monster paymentluckily work have said they'll cover until 11 so hopefully i can get new plates made and fitted before 10:30 ...
