When I was young we had to get up at 4am to help Granddad milk the cows, then it was over to the pens to feed the pigs after which we had to chop the wood for the fire and shovel out the stables by which it was 7 o'clock so Mam gave us a slice of dripping each and we started off with our satchels over t shoulder to walk the 5 miles over the fields to school , aye them was days.

I guess as a child of the 80s I was spoilt. When I was 4 I got to ride to school in the middle of winter sat on the crossbar of my dad's pedal bike.

Fairly sure he didn't park that bike on yellow lines though.

Which is what we had to do all the time in the 1950s/60s, and they certainly did in the 1940s/30s/20s etc. Wrap him up warmly, the sooner he gets used to the English autumn/winter weather, the sooner he'll be able to acclimatise.

And don't worry, the cold didn't kill us off and we didn't catch colds by being out in the cold.

you've reminded me, in the 60s every boy wore shorts all year round until secondary school, sometimes until age 13.
The questions that get the best answers are the questions that give most detail....

When I was in school, the boys only got to wear long trousers when they went into sixth form.

Mind you, the girls had to wear socks - no tights - and bare legs under a skirt get pretty chilly.

My old secondary school actually had a decent sized car park attached to it, which was more than adequate for the school run as it was in a small village so they had A LOT of school buses, the majority of kids got the buses, very small minority got the car.

HOWEVER, the car park was about a whole 100-120 metres across the road from the school, far too far for little darlings to walk, so the parents used to park on the road right next to it, I'd say less than 50 metres or so away, which happened to be next to a busy residential care home and it caused HUGE problems for them.

There were newsletters, things on the school board, begging them to stop. It was absolutely incredible how pig-headed and entitled they thought they were, even though they had a perfectly good car park. They ended up send 1-2 teachers out around school finish time to walk down there and tell parents to jog on and drive around to the car park, the parents would actually drive off when they saw the teacher, go around the block and some straight back, even though it would've been quicker to go to the car park!

I hate yellow lines and residents only parking zones.

They have evolved to keep cars out of town centres and have grown to stretch to locations further and further away from those centres.

Councils then complain when fewer people come shopping, the high street declines. It's not just Amazon. Our local authorities have damaged towns with excessive parking restrictions.

But while I have sympathy with a dislike of yellow lines, they are what they are.

They tell you that what time you're not allowed to park there. Stick to that and you don't get a ticket. It's not rocket science.

I can't believe that this thread has now gone through 100+ posts with about 90% of them being judgmental.

No one knows the full circumstances of either the OP's child or the environment surrounding the school. Some kids have special needs for example and you don't know if the OP's falls into that category.

At my son's school, some kids have to be escorted into the building for all sorts of reasons and I myself have done it when I worked as a PH driver.

The simple fact is (as obviously not many seem to know), there are boarding and alighting exemptions as far as yellow lines (including double) are concerned to enable vulnerable passengers to be assisted into (or from) a near-by building.

My advice was given on the basis that the OP had parked without causing an obstruction, on a yellow line (where there was no other restriction), was alone in the car apart from the child and only left the car for as long as it took to escort the child into the school.

The ticket may of been issued by the CEO who wasn't aware that the OP was legitimately escorting the child into the school, just like many of you don't know.

That's why we have an appeal process and if the OP's case is legit then she will succeed in her appeal. If not she won't... it's as simple as that.

What happened in Victorian times is of no relevance to this at all. Kids used to get corporal punishment as well (God knows I did!)... but they don't anymore!

I don't this is the case. If so, would not the OP would have said so when people started to be judgemental.
