  • Morning All,

I haven't had a chance to log on for a couple of days. Things have been pretty busy as well s DD2 coming down with a bug on top of everything else. :(.

We did all go and see the new Hunger Games Movie at our local cheap as chips cinema on Saturday night. Film was great, cant wait to see the next one now . It was lovely to have a family night together , its such a rarity .

I have something thats been really bothering me these last few days. Am wondering if someone may be able to help out. As you know, out credit rating is well and truly shot to pieces. I need to open a bank account for DD1 , one which has a debit card facility. Where we bank doesn't offer this facility for her age group, so we will need to use another bank. My worry is that due to our situation, I am concerned that the application for her Bank Account will be declined. Does anyone know if this is a likelyhood. As she is a minor , we will need to sign the forms . Could our situation affect her ability to get a bank account now and in the future ? I am guessing it will . This is really worrying me as I feel that we have jeopardized the girls now.:( For some reason this has only just sprung to mind, maybe its because they are getting older.

I have been looking for an account where we don't have debts and I think H@lif@x may be an option to try , although I need to do some research as to exactly who they are linked to just in case. The accounts need to be opened in branch but I am really concerned about taking her with me , and then having her application declined.

This has been causing a few sleepless nights while it whizzes around in my head.

Has anyone reading opened an account for their child whilst on a DMP please ? If so was it a possibility or did it cause a major headache ? Thankyou xxx

I honestly don't know about whether your credit rating will affect your daughter's chance of getting a bank account. My initial thought is no. The best place to ask would be on the budgeting and bank accounts thread [several threads below the debt free diaries thread] you'll probably get an answer quite quickly. Failing that asking in the bank is the only option. There is also a list of which banks are connected somewhere too.

Thankyou Piq, I will take a look at that thread. I have a list somewhere of who is linked to who but not had a chance to read it.

Hope you are well and feeling nicely settled in the new abode xxx

Not quite answering your question but when my mum went bankrupt my brother and I, who were over 16, were advised to contact the credit agencies and complete a notice of dissociation to make doubly sure that her financial problems didn't affect us (as we had no shared finances this may have been unnecessary but as it cost only £6 it didn't hurt in any way either) it is very unlikely that your finances will affect your girls in the long term.

Hope this helps a little, sorry I can't answer the immediate question.

It helps hugely thankyou so much for taking the time to post Vixstar. I just hope and pray that I will never have to tell the girls the extent of all of this. Fingers crossed. xx

  • The following is a reply I received to my question which I posted in the budgeting and bank accounts thread.

"First of all this post needs to be in the 'student' department and secondly, stop wasting time trying to get a bank account for a stupid kid. They only need an account when they go to uni. Your 16 y/o will just abuse it. They don't deserve nor need things like bank accounts at that age. "

Seriously ?? I'm not asking for an account with an overdraft, one specifically aimed at 11-17 year olds where they can put their pocket money / birthday money and withdraw cash from a machine or use it when out rather than carrying cash around. I have a specific reason for hoping to get one for DD1.

The above wasn't quite the advice I was after !:mad:xx

    Hi Mrs PG

Don't know what bank you are trying to avoid so this may or may not help but ....12 months into our DMP we opened an account for DD3 with Nat Wet. She was 11 at the time and we had no problems whatsoever :) Not that we've got any money to give her to put in it mind you :o

Thankyou ruby. I was thinking of trying either NW or H@lif@x.

I think I will try and go on Saturday and see how we get on. xx

Crikey - looks like some forums aren't quite as friendly and helpful as this one then

Sorry I can't offer any advice or knowledge on this one but I completely understand your worries about it - hopefully someone will answer your question on there with a slightly more constructive answer :o
