I quite like having broad beans as a side dish/quick tea with some sliced softened onions, bacon bits fried to a crisp and the broad beans tossed in the pan. Sometimes if I feel decadent, I'll add some cream (or quark or something creamy), season to taste and then serve it on a piece of thick toast."We always find something, hey Didi, to give us the impression we exist?" Hello :j
I thought I would bring this thread back from the depths as I have started to get an organic fruit and veg box redelivered once a week.
Recently I have found that I am eating the same things every week and I am dreading the supermarket run so the box is encouraging me to try different things.
Now I do a monthly cupboard shop online to get my tins and dried goods as well as any household items. The fruit and veg is delivered on a Wednesday and once a week I pop into the shops to get dairy things.
This week we got:- carrots
- turnip
- mushrooms
- broccoli
- onions
- tomatoes
- celeriac
- garlic
- red pepper
- leeks
- lettuce
- cabbage
- apples
- bananas
- oranges
- kiwi fruit
- Roasted veg couscous
- Stir fry
- Soup
- Veg laden toasted cheese
- Root veg pie
Some of the fruit is being used for baking and we are having apple and cinnamon muffins and a banana loaf. It has been really fun and I am hoping some others might join me in sharing their veg box experiencesTaking responsibility one penny at a time!0 -
I get the veg box variety effect by buying what evers on offer or cheap
I've lusted over them before but they are so expensive, I can buy the contents for 1/3-1/2 the price, even if I did want to buy organic it is cheaper and not much hassle for me to go buy it from the shops/market.

You are so right.I went to a farmers market with my daughter recently
and saw one of these veggie boxes cost £16 and knew that I could go to market and get the contents for less than half of that.Slimming World at target0 -
Supermarket organic is (sometimes) cheaper but doesn't taste as good. I figure if I'm shelling out for organic, I might as well go the whole way and get the tastiest veg I can. But as a vegan, a good cook and someone who resents paying for other people to process and cook food for me, I still don't spend a massive amount on food.
I have to say that supermarket organic fairtrade bananas are really good value, not even much more than the conventional stuff, and I can't taste any difference between them and the ones I get with my box. They might even be tastier.0 -
I wasn't really looking to open the debate on the value of fruit and veg boxes or how their costs compare to other places, that would maybe be suited to its own thread.
What I was looking for was to discuss the contents of peoples boxes and the recipes they are going to use.Taking responsibility one penny at a time!0 -
I get a brill organic veg box from a farmers less than a mile from my house so couldn't get more local. Only £9.40 for a weekly box of veg which I think is fantastic value. Just now it typically contains a good few tatties, some onions, leeks, beets, parsnip, a neep, 2 bags of 'winter greens' and a cabbage. Love it! It is only my OH and I so we tend to make a big pan of veg and lentil soup and have that for tea for a few nights, and then use up any of the veg leftover throughout the week with fish / meat / quorn.0

Well I tried celeriac and I am not overly keen to try it again
it was edible but not really something I would enjoy eating on a regular basis.
I am so looking forward to getting my box tomorrow and seeing what's in it this week :jTaking responsibility one penny at a time!0 -
