kale is really love if you steam it lightly and then add in a little butter, garlic granules and top with the hard italian cheese that comes in the plastic canister (asda def sells this i buy it regularly)
it's also very nice if you saute it in with onions and bacon. sautee the onions til they are translucent, add bacon cut up into small pieces (cheap cooking bacon is perfect for this) once that starts to release it's grease, toss in the kale and cook til it's starting to go slightly limp mmmmm very tasty!0 -

I'll add your thread to that one later.

Thanks, Pink. I did search the forum before starting that thread, but I didn't find you. I'm glad I have now!
My veg box arrives tomorrow, so I will update then.

I am a happy contented Riverford Customer.
I can buy in fruit and veg as I want and the qaulity of the the above puts the Supermarkets to shame. (Riverford veg has longer life). I would go with Riverford if they are in your area.#TY[/B] Would be Qaulity MSE Challenge Queen.

I am also on Benefits. I could no longer afford to have fruit and veg go to waste *sweat bags* virtually as soon as I got home so I am more than happy to pay for Riveford to do its' wonders.#TY[/B] Would be Qaulity MSE Challenge Queen.

Hello everybody,
Haven't been around for a while, but then with the Christmas-January fallow period, neither has my box!
I think I get one next week, so will post up my contents and my plans for using it after that.Total debt: [STRIKE]£9473.62[/STRIKE] £7,384.87 22% PAIDTAF #25 NSD 8/12 | Food £43.45/£50 | eBay 0/20 | Exercise 5/18:T Proud to be Dealing with my Debt :TDFD: June 20150 -

My housemate has Riverford, and gets some lovely things. And some nice freebies on a regular basis. I get a local box (because that's my priority, localness) but I do sneak peak at the Riverford recipe cardsTotal debt: [STRIKE]£9473.62[/STRIKE] £7,384.87 22% PAIDTAF #25 NSD 8/12 | Food £43.45/£50 | eBay 0/20 | Exercise 5/18:T Proud to be Dealing with my Debt :TDFD: June 20150 -
I haven't been very good at keeping this thread going, so I'm going to try a bit harder with it!
OK so my box was delivered yesterday, and I got:
Potatoes
Parsnips
Carrots
Onions
Leeks
Chestnut mushrooms
Cavelo Nero
Cherry tomatoes on the vine
(and eggs but they're besides the point)
I had some of the mushrooms with pasta yesterday. A Nigella Lawson recipe, really simple:
A clove of garlic
2-3 tbsp olive oil
1/2 lemon, juice and zest
1/2 tsp salt
Chopped parsley
Grated parmesan
Spaghetti
Crush the garlic clove, and put in a bowl with the olive oil, lemon juice, zest and salt. Slice the mushrooms, and toss in the "dressing" to "marinate" (the mushrooms soak up the juices a bit and get softer)
Toss the cooked spaghetti in the dressing and sprinkle with the parsley and parmesan. Eat, quickly!
Other plans for the box contents: going to make some of my Mum's famous leek and lentil soup using some of the leeks and carrots; And have to think of what to do with the cavalo; probably have some 3 veg mash at some point (have some haggis in the freezer which will be tasty with that).
Anyway, make more efforts to keep this updated this week.Total debt: [STRIKE]£9473.62[/STRIKE] £7,384.87 22% PAIDTAF #25 NSD 8/12 | Food £43.45/£50 | eBay 0/20 | Exercise 5/18:T Proud to be Dealing with my Debt :TDFD: June 20150 -
Should I start getting a veg box?
Looking into it today. I have looked before but never ordered one. Just looked at riverford & the flexibility with orders etc looks great.
Are riverford the best?
How long does the fruit/veg last? Could I get a big box fortnightly & make some of the longer life veg last til the second week?
I looked at what is in the boxes this week. Do they alter much or are they the same for a few weeks in a row sometimes??
What box is best value??SAHM Mummy tods (born Oct 2007) and dd (born June 2010)0 -
Riverford is really good, their stuff is generally very cheap and lasts well. The tougher stuff will definitely last until the end of the second week. Some of the inbetween-toughness stuff will last until at least halfway through that week too
My only problem with Riverford is that you can't exclude things you genuinely won't eat from your order. They tend to be a little bit different each week, and also if they don't have enough of one thing they might change it at the last minute, so bear that in mind if there were things you were counting on getting/not getting. I'm not sure what box would be best value because it depends on how much veg you eat, basically. Cooking for two vegetarians, I find the seasons box + potatoes + onions + garlic + fruit is the best fit. The loose fruit and veg are still pretty good value, though.0 -

Thanks for your quick reply. Between us there isn't much veg we won't eat so that shouldn't be a problem. I think my son (who does love vegetables anyway) will be even more adventurous if he sees a box being delivered. He loves a trip to the local farm shop!
I have another question about riverford- are the deliveries at approx the same time each week?SAHM Mummy tods (born Oct 2007) and dd (born June 2010)0
