Thanks...but errr..nope the purple/red colouring goes some inches up the stem (6 inches or so?) and its straight shaped (ie same sorta shape as a leek - till one gets to the "internal" bits that are divided into spring onion type bits).
I'll take a look through my Fothergills catalogue. You've got me stumped LOL. Strange they have no smell as I'd have suggested red spring onions or fresh garlic too."Who’s that tripping over my bridge?" roared the Troll.

Are they wild leek?? (Otherwise known as ramps I think) http://www.google.co.uk/images?hl=en&safe=off&client=firefox-a&hs=xy3&rls=org.mozilla:en-GB:official&q=wild+leek&um=1&ie=UTF-8&source=univ&ei=hqm6TM_yOYyOjAffuuWpDg&sa=X&oi=image_result_group&ct=title&resnum=1&ved=0CCsQsAQwAA&biw=1024&bih=5510

:eek:I can't find anything remotely like it in my catalogue."Who’s that tripping over my bridge?" roared the Troll.

They are at the top end. Nope - the veg. look/smell nothing like garlic - defo not that family. I've had some pretty unusual garlic before now and its nothing like that and there is it being the shape of a leek for its bottom 6" or so (ie straight up and no sign of any divisions at that end).0 -

Cut one open, then and have a taste:rudolf: Sheep, pigs, hens and bees on our Teesdale smallholding :rudolf:0 -
Hmmm...I wonder...it looks like there were leaves at the top and that they've been chopped off. They are thicker than the photos seem to indicate - like a RATHER thin leek in thickness. That may be what they are then - couldnae swear to it. If that is what they are then I guess I could do anything with them that I could do with leeks?0 -

Hmm...will have a go at that in a minute then =- when I've finished my breakfast. Dont think whatever-it-is would mix well with toast and coffee....:cool:0 -
If it is that they can be used raw, but have a strong flavour which mellows as it cooks, and I would use it in place of leek or onion.0
