Thank everyone. Will try a few of the mentioned ones tomorrow and see how much it effects speeds before I buy anything. I don't mind paying a few £ a month if it means I don't have virgin media dictating what I can use the Internet I pay them for to access.

    I would look here http://schoolofprivacy.eu/vpn
and read here http://schoolofprivacy.eu/interviews and http://schoolofprivacy.eu/reviews

for xbmc, the blocking is not done on the video streaming end, but on the search end. Also check out http://www.xbmchub.com/blog/2013/11/22/painless-domain-proxy-fix-for-1channel-in-the-united-kingdom/

Thanks. I've never had any issues with 1channel, but virgin have blocked project free TV. I am using onavo protect on my iPad which works perfectly and is free.

I'm just sick of virgin charging premium prices then telling me what sites I can and can't visit. But I'm kind of stuck as I'm so far from the exchange most I can get is 2meg down the phone line.

It's not Virgin telling you what sites you can and can't visit, it's the law.

This is the result of a court ruling because of piracy and copywrite infringement.

The ruling applies to UK ISPs so BT etc are all blocking this and other sites, about 30+ so far.

And this isn't going to get any better as the ISPs are not challenging these rulings. This means that the process is just a matter of film and TV companies submitting the paperwork to the courts making it a simple formality. They are having a field day and there's currently nothing to stop them.

Its a law that only affects the computer illiterate though.

The current batch of now prohibited sites can all be bypassed easily.

1channel was back up within a couple of hours of being blocked in the UK. piratebay has never gone away, its just harder to link to from a google search.

It'll soon be a case where we are prohibited from using proxys in this country, although if you asked a judge what a proxy is he wouldn't have a clue.

Does it effect speed a lot?

Nope not at all. I stream and game and don't find I have any speed problems at all.

Think I'm going to go with either pureVPN or hotspot shield.

I read this thread, XBMC user as well. I just joined Purevpn & it works fine. Went for an annual deal for $49 works out at about £31.50 for a year so just over £2.50 a month which isn't bad at all.
