As the title says. Looking for a decent VPN

With virgin media and they block just about everything these days. I'm not talking torrent sites but I do stream some shows as they're shown stateside. Before anyone says, I don't download them and do buy the DVD's when they're available. I'm just impatient and don't want to wait until they're shown here.

So I'd like a VPN so I can go on whatever site I please.

Anyone recommend a decent one?

Thanks.

Does it effect speed a lot?

  • Another option is MediaHint add on for Firefox which works well if you want to watch US programming in the UK or UK in the US - you enable for viewing then disable for normal web use as it does slow things down a little when searching/navigating the web but still allows decent speeds for streaming video. Combine with Adblock and US shows don't show adverts either.

  • I use a VPN to enable me to download and watch programs from the BBC iplayer website (I'm currently outside of the UK), and there is one trick that I've learnt that may help.

All of the VPN's that I've tried seem to reduce the download speed a fair bit, so what I do now is to connect up to the iplayer site via the VPN and start the download, and once it's started, I disconnect it and use my normal ISP and the download speed increases a fair bit.

It looks like the iplayer website has software that determines your location when you first connect up, but then if your location changes, this isn't picked up and you are allowed to continue downloading.

If you have problems with streaming due to poor download speed, it might be worth seeing if this method will help.

I do have a TV licence in the UK so I'm not watching the BBC without paying towards it.
  • I would say make sure you choose a VPN which allows you to choose the location of the server/IP you connect through, so for example to watch US shows connect through as US server/IP address.
  • The one that I use (www.strongvpn.com) allows you to choose which country you want the server based in (you have a choice of UK, USA, Holland or Canada), and you can change country locations and server locations within that country up to 15 times a month at no extra charge. (you can pay for extra changes if required).

I pay $54 a year for the package I use.

One of the problems you may find is that while the VPN allows you to visit the site now blocked by UK ISPs the data stream will be slow enough to make the show pretty much unwatchable.

Also using sites like hidemyass.com will get you to the site they won't let you view the programs because they don't work with video, flash etc.

I use iPredator VPN it's not free but you get unlimited VPN (no speed limits or data limits!)

It costs 50 sek (or just under £5 ) a month. you can buy in 1,3,6,12 month blocks.
