    From the Daily Mail link;

    The number of deaths on the roads have dropped to the lowest level for almost 90 years.

    So fatalities are falling, and thus the roads are safer.

    Our roads are getting safer; accidents, casualties, fatalities are down for all road types and users. With one exception; pedal cyclists, and specifically adult pedal cyclists. The number of adult cyclists killed or seriously injured appears to be on an unpward trend. Some of this will be down to the increase in cycle traffic, but what is the explanation for the rest? We have the same roads, total vehicle traffic has not increased. It must be something to do with road behaviour.

    Perhaps we should get Bojo to follow the example of his Parisian equivalent and arrange for "appos! sur chaque guidon de V!lib' un autocollant appelant à se m!fier des angles morts et à ne pas d!passer un v!hicule par la droite". Which I believe means putting stickers on cyclists handlebars reminding them to be wary of blindspots and not to to overtake vehicles on the right. (Or the left as it would be in the UK .)

    Well I'll put it to you
    How do you teach kids on roads where people are being killed?
    I have cycled along the road with my boy on the pavement(5 years old)
    its not easy

    When I taught my children to ride their bikes, I always emphasised the need to establish eye-contact with other road-users.

    My recent experience is that most cyclists rarely look over their shoulders.

    My son-in-law has recently purchased a kiddie-seat which sits over his handlebars. Twice recently, he has fallen over whilst running!

    So vehicle traffic hasnt increased, but cycling has
    well there's a reason for increased infrastructure
    It doesnt matter if overall deaths fall when you are the one who is dead
    Deaths on the roads drop to a record low but number of cyclists killed goes up 10%

    I was on a bus a couple of years ago that collided with a cyclist.

    What seems to have happened is that the cyclist tried to overtake the bus on the inside whilst it was moving relatively slowly. Suddenly, the bus sped up, and at the same time the road narrowed and pavement-edge railings started. The cyclist ended up trapped between the bus and the railings. Fortunately, the speeds were still fairly slow and the cyclist was not hurt, although the bike was damaged.

    It's easy to imagine similar scenarios that are not directly the fault of the motor-vehicle driver.
