You mean like the £1 billion tram line just built in Edinburgh?
no,they didnt bother keying in cycling infrastructure

Does anyone have any experience of using this in Edinburgh?

Stick a 23c wheel down those tram lines and there will be a meeting of cyclist and tarmac.

Near me there was a major road built linking the M1 and the M6 in the midlands. Cyclists were a 'prime consideration' so to negotiate the M1 end the A50 needs to be crossed twice by subterranean tunnels, a cyclepath needs to be negotiated (well it's got a picture of a bike on it) which is full of composting trees, glass and litter and has never been swept in 8 years. If you can manage that and are brave enough to cycle through the traveller's dogs you need to then get off the bike and climb over an earth mound placed on the path to (not) prevent the travellers living there.

I think the cycle route was probably designed by the It's a Knockout team.

    Phew!

Thought I'd look this one up on wiki to see if I could discover what sinister characteristics you may be alluding to....

At the top, I was greeted by a message "This article has multiple issues."

I guess that's what you meant?

It also says give cyclists as much room as you would a car
    Rules 163
give motorcyclists, cyclists and horse riders at least as much room as you would when overtaking a car.

I probably leave a gap between my car and any car I am passing of at least 2 feet. If passing a cyclist or horse I would try and at least double this gap.

If the cyclists were two abreast I would obviously need to move at least 4 feet further to the right to give the same space to the outside rider.
    I think....

    bigger than 23c

Nice pinch point of death if you choose not to cross the tracks and stay left

    tramfail1.jpg

or the now infamous Haymarket turn

    hqdefault.jpg

    which led to this 'solution'

    1472115682.jpg

The designated cycle route thats actually a taxi/drop off point

    _70795053_photo.jpg

so leave the road past the lane intruding taxis,go into a taxi area with taxis pulling out to leave, peds going to/fron the station and rejoin the traffic you left on the same bend

For centuries, we have had carriageways, and we have had walkways. Until relatively recently, there has been no obvious need for a separate network of cycleways.

Hopefully, cyclists will eventually have their own dedicated space, but in the meantime we have no choice but to intrude into the space of others.

But I hope I will never become a 'martyr to the cause' as a result of failing to recognise my vulnerability.

Well it depends how you view it
before car ownership became the norm,we had mass bike use
What comes first? need or infrastructure?
we went with need, some other countries went with infrastructure

So it seems that the public have voluntarily decided they prefer cars to pedal cycles.
