Why don't you ride your bike alongside the railway lines? No junctions, no roundabouts, no pedestrians, no door mirrors to tear your lycra...
It would be relatively simple to pour some concrete into the ballast in order to provide a firm base for cycling.

All you have to do is paint a white line down the middle of the raised bit between the tramways, and you have a perfect 2-way cycle track. Watch out for the lamp-posts though!

Do you think if we removed licencing, numberplates and to some extent accountability for car drivers the standard off driving would go up or down? Do you think the road would become safer for other road users such as HGV's?
You have a flawed argument, you are correct that presently licenced drivers do not follow the letter of the law but removing this would clearly make things worse.0 -

How are you going to set up this registration scheme?
all bikes?
Only new bikes?
Only new road bikes?
what about if i buy a frame?
Do the bikes have licence plates that are easily visible?

Those 'lamp post' would be the power lines for the trams.

How do cyclists actually get on and off this mecca of a faclity?
also bearing in mind the requirement to cross tram lines at an acute angle whilst dodging traffic
on a serious note. this is the heart of Edinburgh and as you can see,no HGVs! (well excluding early AM hours for delivery :eek: )

My experience of cycling at Tower Hill in London where the cycle lane is a white line is that the cycle lane is full of HGVs ignoring the white line.
I once tried passing the 2 lanes of HGVs, buses and cars on the right. The sole car in 2 lanes coming in the opposite direction changed lanes from inside to outside and drove straight at me at about 50mph, despite the 30mph speed limit and the (presumed) part of the Highway Code that forbids deliberately trying to kill people.
Drawing a white line on a road isn't a cycle lane any more than putting a 70mph sign up on Picadilly would turn it into a motorway or writing 'CAT' in marker pen on the side of a dog makes it feline!0
