Tatty Cathy - I can only speak for myself here. It's my opinion only. I love my machine , I am in awe of it
You can only use the software that comes with it. I have upgraded to the designer edition but the basic is fine. I wanted to design my own files so I upgraded. They have their own shop for files but their are millions of files available for free. ;-)
If I was buying another I would probably buy it from eBay as I've had mine before they came into county ( from America)
They are expensive, think they are £250 @ the moment.
When I got mine my friend purchases the cuttle bug . She rarely uses it and asks me to cut for her. The advantage being I can get a design from anywhere usually free and she would pay £50 for a cartridge and use 1 design.
As regards cost effectiveness it's a difficult one to answer. I have made a lot of personalised things, as in t-shirts. Vests bags, cards, sweet boxes for charities, glass etching. Fabric collage. Rhinestone templates Vinyl designs on mirrors. So the machine has probably paid for it self twice over, if I had to buy them.
If mine broke tomorrow I would immediately purchase another, stash ban or not lol
There's a great forum silhouette plus . American based - there's also an online shop called silhouette America where you can see all the designs.
The silhouette does need to be connected to a computer and a basic understanding of computer s is required.
Please note I'm not encouraging you to buy one mind , I'm just enthusiastic about mine.
This is a blog I run for Christmas and there are free files on there

Sorry for hogging board
I love this thread , it keeps me inspired
Note to self - stay off pininterest, keep losing hourscraftingmad wrote: »Hi tattycath,
I have a Craftrobo Lite machine which is very similar to the silhouette cutting machine and can use their software and cut files. I think this cost me around £99 several years ago. I bought it because I was just getting into scrapbooking at the time and the craftrobo can cut any font on your computer so thought it would be great for titles etc.
I have used it to cut various bits and bobs out and have amounted a large collection of cut files over the years (some free and some paid for) but to be honest I personally normally use my trusty Bigshot for die cutting.
However now that I am trying to not buy anything new I am thinking that I might dust off my craftrobo and start using it more, as already mentioned, it is great for making personilsed items.
I've just looked onEbay and you can buy a second hand one like mine for around £80 at the moment.Florenceem wrote: »I don't have a Silhouette or Craftrobo.
I had one of the old style Sizzix machines - sold that on bay of e.
I do have a Cuttlebug + a Big Shot + a Grand Calibur.
Thank you all for your input. I shall ponder a while before I make a final decision.
I need to get lots of my stash used first-and raise some money to fund it. :rotfl:
I finally got round to watching the first 2 episodes of Sewing Bee yesterday.GE 36 *MFD may 2043

Hi Everyone, checking in for weekly update. Not going to post my list as I haven't achieved anything on it for a couple of weeks, but I have been tidying, resorting and parting with some stash.
I have sorted out all my dolls house stash and decluttered by about 30 things, to make room in the storage boxes for other stuff that didn't have a home. I've chucked loads of packaging by opening the packets and storing the contents in said boxes, and found a lot of fabric bits and craft stuff for the local special needs nursery. so although I've nothing to cross off my list of projects I have actually done some destashing.
Hoping to get back to the projects this week - first on the list getting all the wedding Orders of Service finished.
You all seem to be doing well, keep up the good work!Keep Calm and Carry On Kondoing

Hi Tattycath, my block of the month quilt pattern was from a quilt group that I belonged to. It is from 2009 and as far as I know one of the members had found patterns of different techniques and ideas. Needless to say I still haven't done anything with mine otherwise I could show you!!! Hope that helps xxKeep Calm and Carry On Kondoing

Thank you. I have found some free kind of tutorials on Craftsy if anyone is interested. I haven't actually done any yet but I have enrolled for some (they can be done any time, on line, it's not for a qualification it's just to broaden knowledge I think).GE 36 *MFD may 2043

Florenceem the pouch is lovely and well done on your 50/50 :T
After looking at the button art I thought I'd give it a go, I didn't glue anything down I just wanted to see what it would be like to make something, I sat for about 40 mins and ended up with this, one of my granddaughters then nudged it and messed it up :rotfl:.
It's my younger sisters birthday in a couple of days and when I showed her a picture of the gingham bunting I'd made she said she'd always fancied some, one guess as to what she got as part of her birthday and she loved it :T.0
