Sounds like a misinformed or badly trained partner.

We did just that at Waitrose in John Lewis and got our two coffees using two WR cards without buying anything (we did later).

I have just taken the following from the t&cs on mywaitrose

    Free hot drink
    1. Offer available to all myWaitrose members on presentation of a myWaitrose card in store.
    2. One per myWaitrose member per day.
    3. Only Americano, Cappuccino, Latte, Tea, Mocha and Espresso (Decaffeinated versions, Mocha and Espresso available in selected stores only) qualify as a free hot drink.
    4. Selected stores only, excludes Costa Concessions, online, petrol filling stations, Shell and Welcome Break.
    5. Subject to availability.
    6. No purchase necessary.
    7. Cannot be used in conjunction with other Caf! or hot drink offers.
    8. At any till the myWaitrose card must be scanned to activate the offer. Quickpay customers must scan their myWaitrose card at any point during their shop.

Might be worth challenging or emailing Waitrose to ask why that store has different conditions.

Since I don't have much to lose now :p

When stores have different conditions, it's usually because a few customers have kicked up a stink and those above have given in. They put such high value on customers going away happy, they'd rather lose money than stick to the actual rules. Somebody did that at our place to eat and we went from only giving customers regular drinks to pretty much anything they asked for just so nobody would complain. Complaints equal having to send vouchers and losing more money than just giving customers anything they demand. It comes out of catering's budget and they just can't afford to keep it going at this rate.

I hope I've guilt tripped everybody enough to not abuse that. If you've got a genuine issue you're well within your rights to have it sorted out. But the customers demanding more and more from the scheme, like the super duper hot choc and the jam and cream with scones is what has ruined it for everyone else.
'til the end of the line

Well they've been doing this for about 3 months now, it's even typed up on a board- its known by all staff members I've seen there and there are many staff members and managers.

I've used JL/Waitrose Oxford Street many a time and I'm not aware of any spending requirement. They just require you to have a till receipt for the free tea/coffee.

Thanks chewynut. Maybe i could start a campaign to ask JL to bring back the vic sponge, i am surely not the only person to believe it is the most delicious of all their cakes.

the chocolate one is the bestest then the carrot cake!!

If they require a till receipt in order to claim a free drink, doesn't that mean you have to have made a purchase which goes against the "No purchase necessary" term?

exactly! And if you are in the store to read the signs you'll read that you need to spend more than £10 to take up the offer. If I get a chance to visit the store I'll try to take a picture of this, though it is quite a bit out of my way, if no one here is going to believe me despite my experiencing this each time I visited in the last 3 months then I will try to do this.

In my store, if you only want a drink, you can go to the customer service desk, present your MyW card & they will give you a printed receipt showing the "purchase" of your drink. I assume that they just need to record the "purchase" for accounting purposes.

I have seen many people do just that and not buy anything else.

We do not have a caf! in our store but recently they have had a bit of a changeround and have now put in a bar with stalls where you can sit & have your drink.
