It is true, smokers smell, it is a very strong powerful, get up your nose, horrible smell as they waft past, as they put one out and get on the bus, it follows them, it is in their clothes, breath, hair, smells old and musty and is very prominent, you can always tell how long ago a smoker had a ciggie.

You can smell it in the air, on them as they come towards you, in the room they have been in, on their clothing, smokers and smoking smells and it is not pleasant.

Nearly moved carriages this morning as there was a horrible smell of 'just had a fag before getting on the train' in there. And it reeks in the lift at work if you get in with someone who just had a cig outside.

Was there no point where you said to your brother it was a temporary arrangement? Did you say you'd put him up 'for a while' or until he got a job or anything? Did you say he could move in indefinitely?

As above, if you boot him out, he should be homed by the council (or whoever does it these days). It may be a hostel, a room, or a flat, but he should at least have a roof over his head.

Sounds to me like things are way to comfortable with you. Is he not contributing towards anything? Is he making an effort to find work?

I think it's time to act now before six months turns into a year, and before they stop his JSA - they won't pay that forever. You don't want to end up with a family rift. (I can't imagine how difficult it would be living with a sister and a brother!)

Tell him to quit or move out.

Anyone who smokes & thinks others can't smell it are deluding themselves, it's the same as people who can't smell their own perfume anymore and put it on stronger & stronger each time!

I remember working in the kiosk at a supermarket & some people could be 3-4 foot away approaching the desk and you could literally smell them coming!

My BIl smokes and our spare bedroom can smell for around 2 days after he's left the house after staying a night!

Meritaten unless you shower, wash your hair & brush your teeth and change clothes after every single fag, the rest of us would be able to smell it easily.

So the anti-smoking brigade have made their point. Thank you.

If your brother smelling of smoke is bothering you that much OP you'll have to ask him to leave. If he's managed to give up drinking already, it's unlikely that he's ready or willing to give up his fags too.

There is the question that perhaps living rent free he has more left to spend on fags than he might otherwise. I know that wasn't your priority but I think the time has come to discuss finances with him. BUT, there's not much point in asking for rent if no matter what he pays you the fags are a dealbreaker.

    .

It's not even like that, it's just plain facts. Smoking smells and the people that smoke do, as well as giving off a smell when around them, fact, no denying it.

The smell of a fag being smoked doesn't bother me at all, it's the after the fag lingering smell that's utterly horrible. It turns into some sort of bionic supercharged funk when someone tries to cover the smell up with perfume, yuk. And I agree, smokers who think they don't smell are deluded, you all do no matter how much you spray or suck mints.

  • OP: what is your sister's take on this? Without her being in agreement with you that your brother's smoking is an issue you are not going to get anywhere with this.

Even if he's a relative, he should not expect to live with you long-term (and six month is long-term, and as long as he has no job there will be no end in sight) without making some kind of contribution towards your utilities. I would have a think about whether you are both willing to give him his marching-orders if doesn't comply with your wishes about smoking outside and not fouling the atmosphere indoors with it. If he does smoke exclusively outside and still reeks of it then his personal hygeine is in question an he should address that.

If you're in rented accommodation your landlord isn't going to be happy when you hand the property back stinking of smoke.

That is what the thread is about! A person who smells of smoke. What else do you expect people to talk about?

  • Tell him to try e-cigs. They're amazing. Not the rubbish look-a-likes, but something like an SD Keyring or an ego set. You can get them online for not much more than a pack of fags. Still get the nicotine but no smell and lovely flavours. It's like going from black and white to colour TV. Saves a fortune too.
