So the anti-smoking brigade have made their point. Thank you.
I'm not anti-smoking at all. But yes, I used to get quite defensive too and I had no idea how bad I stank either. Nobody's having a go - it's just how it is. But it's your body - do whatever you like with it! Just don't be ill-educated about it. When a person smokes, the body thinks it is being poisoned so it tries to protect itself by dulling down senses of taste and smell, and producing mucus to try and protect the lungs. When you stop, the senses come back and the mucus stops being produced. That's why non-smokers can smell smokers as they REALLY are, and smokers can't.

Buy him an e-cig for christmas with a juice flavour he loves. Tell him to try it for just a day. It's like going from a value burger to fillet steak.

You can get them online for not much more than a pack of fags. Still get the nicotine but no smell and lovely flavours. It's like going from black and white to colour TV. Saves a fortune too.
Great idea. I'm evangelical about e-cigs, after 15 years of smoking it is the only thing that has stopped me smoking or even wanting to smoke anymore.
And yep, I can now sniff out a smoker from several metres away. Some smell a bit less strongly than others, but they all have that fag ash smell! I'm mortified to know I used to smell like that too.Public appearances now involve clothing. Sorry, it's part of my bail conditions.0 -

Ha that reminds me of an old work college who was having some mental health issues, and as she was stressed decided to restart her smoking habit, but was scared her DH would find out when he picked her up.
She'd go out & smoke, come back in then cover herself in hair spray & perfume & then ask us to sniff her and say stuff like ' yeah I don't think you can smell it now can you?' I was honest and said no you just stink of perfume, hair spray AND fags now!
Another one was trying to give up but she'd come in stinking and I'd say oh the quitting thing isn't working then? She used to be horrified I could smell it on her, she couldn't even when having a really good sniff!0 -
I'm not anti smoking but there is no way you can get away from the smell, even if you smoke outdoors and wash your hands. I think it bothers some people more than others because I have a friend who lives with a smoker and it doesn't seem to bother her.
You say he gave up drinking, by that I assume he had a drink problem, so asking him to give up the cigs may be too much so you need to discuss this with your sister and brother. I don't think he can eliminate the smell as it will be in his hair, on his clothes etc. But he could agree to wash his hands after a ciggie and have a smoking jacket
by that I mean a coat or jacket which he wears for a ciggie, now this will absolutely stink but he can leave it in a bag outside but it does help stop the smoke clinging to his clothes. Also use febreze in the main room where he sits, although the smell does seem to drift around the house.
Only you can decide whether it is so bad that he has to leave, however he has to respect your wishes while living in your house. The most potent weapon of the oppressor is the mind of the oppressed. Steve Biko0
