  • I'm thinking of applying for AMEX Platinum.

Could I get away with household income including that of my parents?

If not, how nice that when applying for uni fee help, etc, they are taking into consideration, but when trying to get a beneficial credit card they're conveniently not!

You would need to ask AMEX but I suspect not.

I totally appreciate your sentiments, but you cannot compare government policy with a private business.
I used to feel like you when I was at uni but if you put it in a global perspective then "it's another day for you in paradise", so without meaning to sound patronising (because I used to feel the same way) then perhaps consider what you do have on a global scale, because even the poorest in our country are very wealthy in global terms with access to clean water and free health care.

Why not get a credit card with your bank?
There might not be any huge cashback perks but it's a good idea to build some credit history.
People with no credit history can find it difficult to get mortgages etc. so it will help you get creidt in the future if you pay it off every month.

Does anyone know if the Capital 1 card is still paying cashback? I have had one of these for a couple of years and did well on the cashback, now I am not sure I am getting any at all and their website is next to useless!

    Thanks

I'm not sure to be honest, but the cashback was always printed on statements, so you could check that.
I closed mine when they dropped it below 1%.

I just called to activate my new Barclaycard Cashback card - I heard by word of mouth that Morgan Stanley/Goldfish had been taken over...Little was I informed about any annual charges and when I tried to claim the cashback in the form of a cheque I was refused saying it will go onto the Barclaycard as credit on your bill...talk about communication down the pan...I didn't even receive any correspondence informing me of the migration either - I think alot of people have been left in the dark! Not sure what our rights are as a consumer but I sure will be cancelling and moving my spending elsewhere...

    Anyone else in similar position?

Same here, I rang last night on the MSDW / Goldfish freephone number, as I see that the Barclaycard one is not a freephone  to sort out my cashback and was told that it'll be transferred to the Barclaycard in the first month and that they couldn't do anything about it until after all the takeover had happened.

Had heard Egg was okay and have also been told about Capital one so will be looking at which of those best suits my need today.

Cactus_Jack, AMEX, I got myself one a few months back with the 5% cashback of the first 3 months offer and they're brilliant, it's just a shame that it's not universally accepted but I find that lots more places take it than I first thought.

Well, Egg is not the one for me, no freephone number and only those registered before Oct '01 are eligible for cashback:

    Hi Alistair,

Just thought I'd poin t out that you may not have the same card as disney_cjd and the cashback is linked to the specific type of cap one card you had.

My first one was called "circle rebate" (I think) a few years ago.
The recent 4% offer was called platinum.
So we need to know exactly which cards we are talking about here before saying the same rules apply as capital one have many offerings.
