You need to check with you seller whether they will accept cards and if so which ones (AMEX is least likely due to the very high charges).

One technique (if high cashback is available) is to splot the difference with the seller.
e.g. If you get 5% offer to give them 2.5% to cover their costs.

    Alternatively negotiate hard.
If you are not committed to the sale you could "walk away".

I'm not aware of any high paying cashback cards except AMEX at the moment and this will be the most difficult one to persuade them to take.

Why not just negotiate hard for a discount instead?

You will only win here if you can find a cashback card where the cashback exceeds the retailer fees and I'm not sure that exists right now.

Hi, I bought a car earlier this year and was hoping to use a cashback credit card but it didn't really work out like that. The car dealer's seem to only accept a credit card for the deposit, rather than for the full payment of the car. Also i then negotiated to have as large as possible deposit but they said the maximum I could put on a credit card was £1000.
I then asked if they took Amex (as i was still in the 5% cashback into period) and they said yes but when they actually came to do it I asked if there was any fee involved and lo and behold they charged a 5% fee for using Amex so it would have totally cancelled out any cashback, so i didn't bother.

i guess it's worth checking with your dealership but don't get your hopes up.

  • Thanks Guys,
It looks as if I'm not going to be able to save any more money on this car. I've already negociated a £750 reduction in the price but was hoping to save more money without inconveniencing the vendor. Persuading him to use AMEX would probably require a 5% fee (as happened with Zebedy) so it woldn't be worth it. Oh well, nice try!
    Thanks again for the advice!

Just a thought but might it be worth considering (at zero cost) to push your cashback rate up on AMEX.
I can't remember what the top band pays but it's definitely tiered with AMEX, so would push you up inot the top band for your other spending.

Are the GE Money and Morgan Stanley Plat Cards still good cards to have or do you think I should be considering changing them now?

I've noticed that they aren't on the best list any more or was there another reason they have been removed?

Morgan stanley has now been taken over by BARCLAY BANK and are going to start charging £20 annually from 22nd sept for the use of the card

I was made aware of the transfer to Barclaycard when I called Customer Services last week to claim my cashback (which I wasn't allowed until the transfer had gone through). Wasn't made aware of the £20 annual fee though!

Where did you find this out?

I've since called up Morgan Stanley to query this as I can't recall receiving any post telling me that the account was being switched to Barclaycard.

They have confirmed that for the 1st year Morgan Stanley customers will not be charged an Annual Fee. The Annual Fee will then be applied at the next Anniversary Date on the account (mine being March 2010).

According to the thread below, the cashback will increase to 1%:

It will be credited to the account at the end of each month. This doesn't seem very beneficial to customer in my opinion as I tend to spend it on something in particular.

  • I am contemplating applying for the Amex Platinum card - I have student loan debt but no problems in the past. I am in a job and will be paying the card off in full every month - the question is, will my credit score be affected if I apply for this card or other cards and get turned down?

I had tried last year when I was going into my final year as a student and obviously nobody would touch me (!) but now I'm working...?
  • I've been with Egg for over a year and I have been very happy. I have now applied for an AMEX (via Rpoints, so I also get cashback ;) ) and I am waiting for it to be delivered. Will keep you posted...

I just called to activate my new Barclaycard Cashback card - I heard by word of mouth that Morgan Stanley/Goldfish had been taken over...Little was I informed about any annual charges and when I tried to claim the cashback in the form of a cheque I was refused saying it will go onto the Barclaycard as credit on your bill...talk about communication down the pan...I didn't even receive any correspondence informing me of the migration either - I think alot of people have been left in the dark! Not sure what our rights are as a consumer but I sure will be cancelling and moving my spending elsewhere...

    Anyone else in similar position?
