Told definately started from application date and there was no way for it to be extended to activation. Luckiy you only have 1 week in question hope it works out for you.

No, I got cashback straight away.
You can use the card straight away without a PIN over the internet or phone.

Also remember that most businesses do not object to you paying in advance :-)
So in general it is possible to pay for annual insurance, hoildays etc. a little bit early to get them within that 3 months period.
So with a bit of ingenuity you can squash quite a lot into the 2-3 months that you have.

I'm sorry you couldn't use your card for 2-3 weeks but I think you could have done.
For example by ordering your food on-line rather than going to the supermarket in person.

To extend your analogy - they're advertising for business and I wouldn't have applied for their card if I didn't meet their stated criteria, in the same way as I wouldn't come round to your house without an invitation. So I question their real motivations in the same way I would question yours if you then didn't let me in.

    Hi OxfordMark,

If you turned up to my party drunk or in some way acted inappropriately then you might not be allowed in. There is a difference between headlines and small print. Credit card companies will have glossy adverts but that doesn't mean everyone will be accepted and you can bet your bottom dollar that the small print covers them.

Their motivation is not in question in my opinion.
They are a business and they want to make money, simple as that.

There is nothing wrong with questioning but you won't get an answer.
There are valid reasons why they won't tell you (because people could change their profie deliberately to get accepted which is not the point of the exercise).

I have been in the same posistion as you in the past so I sympathise but there is simply no compulsion on them to give you what is advertised in the glossy headlines when there is small print to cover them only accepting certain people.

If this is true then thats pretty annoying! Got my card today but no pin number yet and with the postal strike ive got no hope of getting it till middle or end of next week

    Hi Father_Christmas,

The was NOT true in my case, so don't take what one person said happened to them as true for everyone.

Secondly you cannot hold Cap One responsible for the postal strike. I don't work for them and I know some people might think I'm defending them, but I really don't think they can be blamed for the postal strike.

On a more helpful note you can use your card for absolutely loads of things without he PIN e.g. paying for goods over the phone or internet, this includes paying for car insurance, house insurance, holidays etc, so you can make some big purchases without the PIN.
It only means you can't use it in person.

The other thing you could try is calling Cap One and asking whether they would extend it due to the postal strike.
I think the person saying they would NOT extend it posted before the strike so you could give it a go.
So I would advise not to take what one person says as gospel (not because I think they are lying but because if you call a call center 2 days running you can get 2 different answers).

Does anyone know what the best cashback card is that has an MS Money download facility on their website. Capital One don't for "security reasons" (read the techies forgot to implement one and they can't be bothered spending the money now).

I won't use my Cap One card because of this - my budgeting is lost without MS Money crunching my credit card statements!

Just been accepted, form in front of me no annual fee but concerned wording TOTAL CHARGE FOR CREDIT £123.63 whats that all about??

The regulations to do with consumer credit say that they have to tell you the total charge for interest on your borrowing. That works rather well with fixed products like personal loans, but it doesn't work too well for credit cards where the amount you borrow varies massively, if indeed you borrow anything at all. So what they do to arrive at a figure so that they can meet the regulations is just assume that you will borrow a certain amount on your card and pay off at a certain rate. It's basically worth ignoring this figure, as if you always pay the card off in full and don't use it for advances etc., it's of academic interest.

Is Capital One deliberately making it hard to clear statement balances in order to get fees and interest to cover the cashback?

I'm posting this to see if anyone else has hit this - I got accepted for the 4% deal and have been spending like crazy, after the first statement I realised that the bill had not been paid despite thinking I'd set it up to pay off the full amount by direct debit. I immediately phoned, and 40 minutes later to the overseas callcentre (who claimed Cahoot was not a bank etc) set up the direct debit. One month later money was not taken out of my account to pay the now very large bill. Another lengthy, confusing and convuluted phone call later where I was assured my direct debit was set up, a few days later another statement arrived, again not paid, now with £100 interest on.
So another phone call, this time to England, operator said that the direct debit set up on September 2nd would not apply till October 29th (ie eight weeks later) therefore I must pay the bill. I said this was ridiculous, she said it was my word against theirs and to read the direct debit guarantee form (ehhh?) and lo and behold by vacillating with my direct debit they have recovered their 4% cashback.

    Is this standard practice?

I've been paying my cap one bill by on-line BACS transfer wich has been totally reliable i.e. I pay them and don't rely on them to take the money.

It is standard for direct debits to take a while to get set up.
Usually you would get a letter stating when the payments would start.
Did you get any confirmation of when it would start or indeed whether it was set up?

In general the advice I would give is:

For anything important make sure you have written confirmation.

Record all dates, times and names of who you speak to for important conversations. This can allow tapes to be checked but also adds a lot of credibility to any complaints (or court proceedures) if you have all the facts to hand. Even if you don't have proof it can add a lot of credibility.

Where does the cashback amount get put, in your credit card account or to your bank account?

    It says on the website:

Cashback will be payable annually in the month of January and will be credited to your account unless we notify you of another method.

so a pretty good time to get one right now because you'll get paid it very shortly after the 3 months are up.

    Hi oompah,

You can make a payment by BACS using on-line banking.
It's a "push" rather than a "pull" i.e. you send the money rather than them, taking it, but I've used it reliably many times.
    Hi lisyloo

Thanks for that, but the transfer still takes 3 working days minimum, so one has to plan ahead........
