Rehoming a dog

This is a bad idea. The dogs could end up going to a family that are unaware of its issues- with devastating consequences. Or, another thug will take the dog on and train it to be even more aggressive.
As sad as it is, if a decent rescue cannot be found it should be PTS. The poor dog didn't stand a chance.0 -
I've given the girlfriend a load of phone numbers of rescues to call to see if any might be able to help but her lack of interest is staggering.
She just basically wants someone to come to her house and take the dog, with minimal effort from her required.
I could slap her.0 -
A friend's son was sent to prison last month for four years for drug dealing.
He was living at his girlfriend's house with his dog and she now refuses to keep the dog as she doesn't want to have to look after it.
She has phoned every dog shelter within a 40 mile radius and she says all have refused to take the dog as they are so full.
She now says she will phone the dog warden on Monday and say she found the dog. Needless to say, it's not chipped - doesn't even have a collar.
I don't know if the dog warden will take the dog but I can't bear to think of her next move if not. She says she'll tie it to the gate of one of the shelters overnight so they HAVE to take it in:(
I can't take it as I already have two dogs. To add to the problem, it's a two year old male staffie.
Anyone have any suggestions how to have the dog rehomed when it's owner goes to prison? It must be a common problem these days.
If the dog warden takes the dog, its very likely to be destroyed within 7 days. I think what an awful way to be treating a poor dog, tying it to the gate of a shelter. It doesnt deserve to be at risk.
Try safe and sound pound dogs, they have a facebook page and deal a lot with staffies, or dogs trust.
I have no respect for someone like her. If she doesnt want it long term she should at least keep it until it can be rehomed, properly.0 -
That's the trouble. He wanted a weapon dog to scare people away and the poor dog hasn't been very well looked after in that it was encouraged to be aggressive.
Staffies are supposed to be very hard to rehome.
I'll check out staffie rescue centres.
There are behavioural people who work with animals in shelters to help dogs like this
Putting the dog to sleep should be a very last resort
Give safe and sound pound dogs a message on their facebook page.
If they cant help they might put you in touch with someone who can0 -
But the poor dog is only two years old. How can that be the end of his life? I'm just gutted for him.
This must happen a lot, where an owner is sent to prison and there's a dog at home that nobody wants.
Really sad.
Yes, it is really sad:( He might have had a lovely home, with people who would take him to training classes, who would have fed him properly, given him time and love - but he's had none of those things. He has been brought as "hard man's image-maker" - probably encouraged to go for every dog he sees, will have been trained with kicks and whips, and probably trusts no-one. He'll have had little shelter, probably little housetraining - and would be a liability that any shelter would hesitate to take in - because he is 2 years old - so no longer a cute puppy that people would want to take home:( Shelters, Rescues and Dog Pounds are over-run with dogs like this boy - and with all the bad publicity that bull breeds have had recently, they are having to turn away more and more dogs.
Too often, dogs are a "cheap" commodity - a family fancies the idea of having a dog, but then the idea of walking him every day loses its appeal, he pees on the carpet, brings mud into the house, whines and barks- jumps up at the kids - and then the poor animal gets chucked out of the house, into the garden - many aren't even allowed back into the house. And then, a child is killed by a dog - and the shelters, rescues and pounds have many more phone calls from people saying "I can't keep this dog any longer - I want a good home for it". And dogs are tied up outside rescues, thrown out of cars on motorways - or sold as bait dogs for training fighting dogs.
In my ideal world, people would have to pass a test before they were allowed to own a dog!0 -
ALL breeding and i do mean ALL breeding of dogs, and cats should be made illegal until EVERY dog and EVERY cat in EVERY rescue, breeding kennels, pet shop, whatever, is found a home.
Like that is ever going to happen but it would be wonderful.
Animals come way way down the list for too many people ,compared with the latest gadgets and toys.Makes me sick.0 -
I have two staffies, the same age but not from the same litter. They have been brought up exactly the same, but Madam hates other dogs, and his Lordship loves them.Needless to say I keep them on lead, at all times, thus avoid any problems

Well, the dog warden took him tonight.
She said she'd found him so they probably had little option but to come and take him away.
So he probably will be PTS after his 7 days.
Wasn't much of a life for the poor little guy, was it? Just two brief years.
I'm so angry and upset.0 -
IMO there is worse that can happen to a dog than euthanasia. Better than being given away and used as a bait dog, which could have happened had she rehomed him herself (given the lack of effort she wanted to put into finding him a good home)0
-
At least you tried, there was nothing else you could do and you never know he might just find a home. There are a number of rescues that look out for dogs that are to be pts.0
