Rehoming a dog

A friend's son was sent to prison last month for four years for drug dealing.
He was living at his girlfriend's house with his dog and she now refuses to keep the dog as she doesn't want to have to look after it.
She has phoned every dog shelter within a 40 mile radius and she says all have refused to take the dog as they are so full.
She now says she will phone the dog warden on Monday and say she found the dog. Needless to say, it's not chipped - doesn't even have a collar.
I don't know if the dog warden will take the dog but I can't bear to think of her next move if not. She says she'll tie it to the gate of one of the shelters overnight so they HAVE to take it in:(
I can't take it as I already have two dogs. To add to the problem, it's a two year old male staffie.
Anyone have any suggestions how to have the dog rehomed when it's owner goes to prison? It must be a common problem these days.

hmmm - this must be a common problem with prisoners - I am sure there is an organisation which supports families of prisoners - it may be worth a google to find it and give them a call?0

I have googled and found nothing.
Got no sympathy for the son but worried what the girlfriend will end up doing with the poor dog. None of this is his fault.0 -
Unfortunately, there are lots of unwanted staffies out there as they are often seen as "hard" dogs so criminal and thugs often have them. I agree it is not the dog's fault.
There is a staffie rescue organisation, try them..0 -

That's the trouble. He wanted a weapon dog to scare people away and the poor dog hasn't been very well looked after in that it was encouraged to be aggressive.
Staffies are supposed to be very hard to rehome.
I'll check out staffie rescue centres.0 -
I feel so sorry for this dog, all he probably wanted in life was to love and be loved and ended up with some ******* as his owner. I know that doesn't help but stories like this really frustrate and sadden me.
At least the OP is doing her best to try and find him a loving home, good luck.Chuck Norris can kill two stones with one birdThe only time Chuck Norris was wrong was when he thought he had made a mistakeChuck Norris puts the "laughter" in "manslaughter".I've started running again, after several injuries had forced me to stop0 -
If this dog has such a bad background, he is probably not suitable for rehoming, inwhich case his carer should do the responsible thing and have him humanely despatched.
There are far too many Staffies in rescue capable of living happily with a family fir rescues to waste time and money on this poor chap :-(Please forgive me if my comments seem abrupt or my questions have obvious answers, I have a mental health condition which affects my ability to see things as others might.0 -

Unfortunately, there isn't a home for every dog. We kill 7000 every year who have been let down by humans just as this poor dog has.
I admire you for trying, but as Raksha says, it may be an impossible task.0 -
I think it may indeed be an impossible task, to find a home for the poor little guy.
It saddens me that he's such a young dog but because his owner was an idiot and deliberately trained him to be aggressive, he's as good as dead.
The problem at the moment is that nobody will take him, for rehoming or otherwise. The girlfriend is the type that will swiftly move on to the next drug dealer and has no wish to be lumbered with the last fella's dog.
I desperately don't want her to abandon him outside a rescue centre but realistically, that's what's going to happen.

the only other thing I can suggest zaksmum is if you know which prison he has gone to is to contact the prison chaplain? its a long shot I know - but, he/she may have some suggestions?0

I do know what prison he is in and will suggest to the girlfriend that she should try to speak to the chaplain there.
I'd try anything that will stop her dumping the poor dog.0
