Do however, expect loads of calls from the Department of Corrections, pointing out that you probably mean 'purveyors' rather than 'pervaders'
I fully expect the grammar police to be along shortly. :) although I took it to mean "a spreader of religious knowledge".

I am really fed up of people chapping my door just as I sit down to my tea, etc. Drives, double glazing, charity collections (we aren't selling you anything spiel), etc.
My worst was a few years ago now, I was a mum with a young baby and this guy rang my doorbell doing market research. He wanted to show me a video and ask my opinions on it, but he tried to barge into the house because he needed to use a video player!!! What woman in her right mind would let a complete stranger in her house when her husband is at work? He was really put out when I shut the door on him, there was no way I was letting him into my home. I thought he was just going to ask questions on the doorstep, don't most market researchers do that? Probably was about ten years ago now.

Between door step sellers and phone calls...TPS is a waste of time, still getting Asian companies phoning for market research and recorded messages telling me I've won a holiday...never get peace in the evenings.

If its any help to anyone...our local police do stickers for your front door that state ''we do not buy or sell at the door and any other callers will be expected to show identification''..these stickers have the Police logo all over them. I have one and since getting it, have not had any cold callers. Try your local police station and see if they have anything similar.

You could always do what I did (inadvertently) the other day.
My OH had nipped outside to empty the bins, so, when the doorbuzzer went (we're in a small flat block), I answeredm, and pre-empted his request to be let in, by saying in a teasing and (mortifyingly) silly voice 'Are you a plonker?'

The voice came back, with admirable composure, 'No, madam, but I am calling on behalf of the Liberal Democrats...'
I dropped the speaker phone and dived under the duvet until OH came back in. Apparently he'd passed a 'rather confused looking chap on the doorstep with a clipboard'. :o

LibDems never canvassed our flat again...

I politely inform them that I am not interested, and ask them to leave. If they try to put a foot in the door or their hand on the door jam I will advise them that trespassing on private property is an illegal act and that I am entitled to use appropriate force in defending my home, and will slam the door on their extremity if it is not moved immediately. Others who do not take 'No thank you' as an answer are told they can have another response, although it wouldn't be classed as positive either!

I have a "no junk mail" sign stuck on my letter-box flap. They can't miss that sign yet 99.9% of the gits ignore it. Several times I've actually heard them arguing outside as to whether their bunch of flyers does constitute "junk". In every case they decided their leaflets/flyers weren't junk mail and only mail delivered by a postman could be classed as junk

Couple of years ago there was a lovely email in circulation on how to get rid of phone callers, it had things like -
    * if they're money/credit compies, tell them you could do with the dosh/loan because you're a bankrupt
*irrespective of what they're trying to sell you, ask them, in a soft and husky voice what they are wearing, how tall, blonde, dark etc etc
    * ask the to repeat the question(s) several times over ! They will get bored before you do
*and if you're really smart, play them at their own game, try and sell THEM something.....!!

if anyone still got a copy of said email I for one would like a copy..!!!
  • I always find the slamming the door in their face works quite well!:D

with regards the ones who phone just say "hang on a minute I'll just go and get my husband" and then leave them on the other end of the phone for ten minutes, when you pick it back up if they are still there say "thanks for holding he'll be with you shortly" and keep doing that - it sometimes put certain companies off, but even if it doesn't it feels nice to play them at their own game.

No cold calling stickers - don't know where people get these but failing all else make you're own up print it off and stick it on the door - you could also do a specific one directed at EYG:

EYG: DON'T EVEN THINK OF KNOCKING ON MY DOOR - I'M NOT INTERESTED - AND EVEN IF I WAS - AFTER THE AMOUNT OF TIMES YOU HAVE HARASSED ME YOU WOULD BE THE LAST COMPANY I WOULD EVER BUY DOUBLE GLAZING FROM!

    hth :D
I just got in contact with my community support police officer they are going to drop in a no caller sign free. No harm in contacting them look them up on your local police web site :T
  • Just dont answer the door simple as that. Tell any friends or family that if they do call round and find you not answering to simply either shout through the letterbox who they are or give you a quick ring or txt message either before they arrive or whilst their outside.

It is the 'charity bags" that annoys us, we get 1 or 2 a DAY, I find it difficult enough to fill 1 a month let alone that many! If I do recycle I often give it to people I can trust as genuine and I know who wont try selling it on for a profit. We do put signs on the door and recycle bin says please post charity bags in here, weve tried speaking to them but their excuse is they will get sacked if they don't deliver them all and spot checks are made. Almost all of them that arnt thrown in the bin or reused elsewhere (waste paper or bathroom bin liner or paint tray liner) bindont ger collected anyway. I agree what a waste of charity money! :( grrrr
Failure is only someone elses judgement.
Without change there would be no butterflies.
If its important to you, you'll find a way - if not, you'll find an excuse ! ~ Easy to say when you take money out of the equation!

There's another side to this story.
I'm a researcher. Most of my survey work is for the government. Some of it's really important stuff too & helps government departments plan for the services they provide for your local area.
It's so dispiriting going 'round only to get knockbacks on the doorstep most of the time. Most people just assume you're trying to sell something. Or that you're a religious wacko. Or a conman come to rob the house.
As far as I am concerned you are just another cold caller invading my privacy.
Don't try to pass the blame onto us householders, the blame lies firmly with the hordes of cold callers who know they are a nuisance but insist on ringing the door bell right next to a sign saying no cold callers.
But don't write off everyone who knocks at the door.
    We're not all bad
You just don't get it do you? We don't want to be disturbed, that is why the sign is there! Please respect our privacy.

    Dave
