I can see why you wouldn't think being made redundant wasn't your fault. But at the same time, prospective employers may be wondering why the company didn't redeploy you, why you lost your job as opposed to other people still in the company.

    .

Redeploy me where? There were no other accounts roles in fact any other roles in the company. All of payroll were let go and one in accounts - me.

I do not know the reason why I was chosen. My actual role no longer exists there. .

I had been there the longest, on the highest salary etc. Maybe chosen to cut the biggest cost, who knows?

Someone else was let go in January of this year in accounts and the management accountants took on the extra work. When I left they had 28 sites and now they have 23. This is from 43 that they had when I joined with them in 2005

Sure. There's the facts, and then there are the people you apply to, assessing your CV and asking themselves if there was some other role your company could have trained you up for, but elected not to, who ask themselves what have you been doing since you left your job, besides looking for another one. Or questions like, if you knew redundancy was looming (given in Britain "redundancy" seems to mean endless discussions with unions and affected parties in some companies) why didn't you find something else whilst you still had a job.

Meanwhile there are heaps of other accounts people out there, many willing to work for just above the minimum age. Surely it is time to consider doing something else, rather than just waste your life away going for job after job which you can no longer compete successfully for?

No job at the company to train up for as there was no other jobs
How would I know redundancy was looming? No one told us anything was looming. What union? What discussion?
We were told on the Monday someone was going 2 days later I was given 3 days notice and left on the Friday so not time at all to get another job as I had to be at work for the 3 days to complete the month.
I am willing to work for NMW and apply for retail and admin roles too

You are an idiot if you are putting your year 3 SATs on your CV.

Since when were SATS a qualification?

I am somewhat astonished at the turn of this thread. Why are people attacking AP007 for making a lot of effort to gain employment, for having skills and experience in employment, and for having been made redundant in the first place? If these are things to be criticised, maybe it's right - there are no jobs for people, it isn't worth making an effort and she should sit around on benefits for the rest of her life.

The problem is that getting a job is about selling yourself....and many people just don't have a clue how to do about it. They lack the creative thinking to adjust what they say or do to get around any barriers. Their cover letter lack a demonstration of commitment and enthusiasm, lack personality all together. Then even if they get through, they take such a blase attitude at the interview that no matter how good they might be paper, you can tell right away they wouldn't fit in.

The degree of quality in people's CV and interview is incredibly vaste, and unfortunately, those most skilled at the above are the ones who get the jobs. Unfortunately, a lot of the time, these people are genuinely totally unaware of how they come across and therefore blame other circumstances for yet having not been selected for a job. I had to call candidates to tell them they had not been selected because they gave a terrible interview, who when informed state that they thought they had done a very good interview. I have also found that a number of these people become very defensive when they are given advice.

I know the job centre offer interview clinics but I don't know how many of people get offer a place there, how good they are, and how much people take on board what is taught. One very valuable way to spend some of the 35 hours would be to ask family members/friends to pretend to be a mock panel and spending time preparing for a pretend job interview.

My O and A levels aren't on my CV and neither are all the financial services exams I took - does that mean I am committing fraud?

Or the fact that for my first job (which I was in for 14 years), all I give is the name of the company and the dates - with no indication of what I was doing.
  • Am I missing something? Why the personal attacks on AP007, who was made redundant and is obviously now making great efforts to get another job? There seem to be some people who just want to say how awful and difficult it is to get another job and refuse to accept any constructive suggestions. Yes it is very difficult to find work, I know this from personal experience. How does this negate the positive advice and approach shown here?

Your Post struck a nerve, I know I'm now going to have to sell myself which is going to be difficult and also to write a covering letter, also difficult but needs to be done. I haven't even been offered any interviews on job applications that didn't require a covering letter.
Only interview looming is the first JSA interview tomorrow.

They get so many applications from people who are still in work looking for a new challenge, they don't need to risk anything by employing someone previously laid off.

But why wait for someone to give you a job? This is what I don't understand about the long term unemployed. So what no one recogises your worth enough to give you a job. Surely it is up to you to recognise your own worth? Can't you become self employed instead? Maybe not doing the same thing, but at least you would be working. I realise self employment is not likely to be as lucrative as being employed for some people, but at least it's work.

I asked the same user that identical question last month and was baffled by their reply. https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/comment/63529896#Comment_63529896
