Radcliffe is ok. not much to offer in way of shopping etc but 20 mins on tram to city centre, easy to get on motorway too, either at prestwich or Kearsley. and then close to Bury- some decent shops and restaurants. Get some lovely 2 bed houses for £80-90k.
i live in radcliffe so shout if any questions'Children are not things to be moulded, but are people to be unfolded'0 -

How about Eccles? Some parts can be rather rundown and uninviting, but some streets are great, with a solid community feeling. The town centre is depressing but the tram runs there, and depending on where you are the Trafford Centre is on a bunch of bus routes and of course has free parking- open until 10PM too, I think a huge service to anyone who works uneven hours and travels a lot and might just want to have a stroll and some distraction until 10PM at night! 100K won't get you something in the nicest parts (I used to live in Monton Village, which is wonderful) but it will get you something close to the tram (and in fact train) station.0

Thanks for all this folks! It's brilliant to hear what people think. I'm just having a morning browse of the internet. Anyone any thoughts on what this area is like?

!! That'll teach me to post in five minute gaps at work! Though, having said that, Sheffield was my other possibility for a base. Manchester wins out for other reasons...
Having lived and worked in both Sheffield and Manchester I'd be living in Sheffield if I could. Unfortunately my job in Manchester means it would be a nightmare of a commute so I live nearer to Manchester than Sheffield. If they ever build a motorway between the two instead of the poor roads that exist currently, which I doubt they'll ever do, I'll be back in Sheffield before you know it.
Manchester is a good city if you like night life. Sheffield is a good city if you're looking for the big town with a friendly feel to it. It's also a lot greener than Manchester and generally a lower crime and more safe and friendly place. Obviously it has it's trouble spots, but overall Sheffield is a nicer place to live than Manchester for quality of life.0 -
Well, I've viewed houses. And really like one in Whitefield. But I do feel that I need to have a good root around and see some more areas and houses before I make a decision.
I need to take a whole day of house viewing. And I can't do that until mid-December!0
