  • If you are not to fussed with South Manchester try Swinton, or for lower prices but still on good bus/ motorway links in Kearsley, officially cheaper than Swinton as it comes under Bolton rather than Salford

I wouldn't worry about transport into Manchester, if you need to use a car, most of the big car parks do a deal for people working in the city. I used to work on deansgate and had a deal with NCP where I had discount parking at £3.50 a day instead of about £14. It would cost that easy on the train or metro and this way I had the freedom, comfort and flexibility of my own car.
  • If you're looking at Prestwich and Whitefield consider North Bury - good shopping centre and transport links into Manchester and lots of semi rural areas. Also consider Ramsbottom, one of the best places to live in the UK according to The Times - easy to commute into Manchester by car or drive to Bury and get the tram, brilliant restaurants, really good schools, beautiful countryside, lots of nice cheap stone terraces.

Going in completely the opposite direction, I've seen a lovely 2 bed in Gorton, a 10 minute walk from the train station. It seems a very affordable area which makes me think it must be awful!

Gorton has its good pockets - you just have to hunt them out :D We were fortunate to find a 2bed in a quiet cul-de-sac where everyone takes care of their houses and the crime rate is low. It's very pleasant, it's just a shame about the address as this place gets a bad rep. Still if none of you want to move here, at least it'll keep house prices down ;)
