Some of my friends live in Gorton. There are parts there are nicer than others (around Debdale Park is a bit better) but I would prefer to live in other parts of the city, given the choice. TBH I worry about leaving my car there in the evenings.

I've been based in and around Manchester for most of my life (few years down South). I've been trying to think where I would go for in your circumstances. Think I would have a good look around Edgeley (part of Stockport). There's a good selection of property in your price range, the main line station is accessible, good access to the motorways too.

I've lived in Marple and further afield towards the Peak District, but the traffic jams to get back into Stockport and beyond to Manchester are a nightmare and the public transport isn't always reliable.

I currently live in Didsbury, at the end of the Oxford Road bus corridor that people have mentioned. I don't think you would get anything around here for that price. You should be able to get a terrace in Rusholme or Fallowfield though.

Fallowfield is a very studenty area, one of my friends moved out a year ago as she had become practically the only non-student resident in her street and she missed having long term neighbours. Rusholme is the home of the curry mile and has a very cosmopolitan feel, lots of students too. I'd have a drive around these areas if you get a chance to see if they have the feel you are looking for.

Thanks folks - it's great to get some insider knowledge!

Ok, Gorton is out. I'm going to have a good drive around Stockport tomorrow. I'll have a look at Edgeley and Bredbury and the areas Monty-Doggy suggests - and take a quick trip up to Prestwich and Whitefield, on the off chance.

Any thoughts on Brinnington? Not heard of it, but this looks lovely, so perhaps too good to be true!

I'd like to just do one house move if possible - for cost sake, but also because I'll have to make some adaptations to wherever I live, so one house move is easier!

Again good and bad areas of brinnington but this is more stockport side and looks lovely from the street view.

    Reddish is the same.
Avoid the ones further away from stockport.

The one you posted is def worth looking at!

Economically, Brinnington is the poorest part of Stockport, followed by Reddish.

I wouldn't consider Brinnington for a second, although there are bits of Reddish around the Vale that I might possibly view.

Thanks. Well, the drive was an eyeopener! Brinnington, well, there are certainly nice bits, but it did feel a bit tough. In the end I liked the whole area around Cheadle, but honestly? I loved Prestwich and Whitefield. I just had lots of nice conversations with people in shops, and it felt like a real community.

No decisions as yet. I'm going to meet with an estate agent in Prestwich, and another in Stockport, and have a look around a few houses. I'm wondering now if I look at houses around £100,000 whether a lower offer might be accepted, given that I'm a first time buyer. I also need to sort out the mortgage stuff. A bit of a pain that I'm due £5,500 redundancy at the end of April, but I'm hoping to move before then...

    Thanks for help so far!

Ok, I've listened to advice on another thread, so no definite decision about whether I buy in the next couple of months or wait for 8-10 months. Have spoken to future employer, family, friends and mortgage broker and they're all advising that I buy now...

Anyhow, I'm going viewing on Wednesday just to get a feel for things. Looking principally in Whitefield (more for your money than in Prestwich), in the area between Moss Lane and the M60. Have pushed my budget up to £100,000. Any thoughts on the area that I should keep in mind?

    Thanks.
  • The thing about Prestwich is that the route to Manchester is a straight line but the congestion on that road is horrendous! I drive quite close to there and on the couple of occasions where there's been some congestion on my route and I've thought to drive over to Prestwich and see how I get on I've always regretted it. It's like a road that has two lanes in parts then down to one, back to two and sometimes three but for some reason people drive along at barely about 10mph in rush hour, it really is something you should experience for yourself.

What about Rusholme and Fallowfield for this person, it's very studenty but you'd be central and there'd be good night life, cheap places to live. I'm sure there are some good places around there.

Thanks - I'd be using the Metro to get into Manchester, so I'm not too concerned about traffic. The tram is one of the big attractions of the area!

    Anyone else have any thoughts?

For £90k this will limit you to some degree.

Im another one from South Manchester (along with Monty-Doggy), so i can only really recommend parts of those areas.

I was brought up in Burnage, some people would say rough others would say not so - assuming your around Burnage lane at the stockport end i would say you should be alright around there.

You can get some nice flats in Heaton Mersey/Heaton Moor for your budget.

Cheadle Village are is nice enough also and should fall within budget.

You could also look at Sale as again that should be in budget or parts of it at least.

With the exception of Cheadle most will have good links to Manchester (Tram/Bus/Train), Cheadle would be bus only.

I live in a place called Handforth which is probably a little bit far out for you, but you can get a 2 bed house with a garden for around £90-100k. There are trains and buses to Manchester. Its also not far from Wilmslow and Bramhall which are quite nice areas to go for a few drinks at the weekend.

    Hello

I've lived in South Manchester, Stockport all my life. Was raised in Heald Green and now live in Cheadle Hulme.

I think considering your looking for something around 90k, you should explore Edgeley. Please be careful looking around here as some of the terraces are owned by the council and they can often throw anyone in them (You don't want a chavvy neighbour with 5 kids next door to you). There is also a tower block which I used to live in named Hollywood Towers, avoid it. If you can get something in Edgeley but more towards the big Morrisons, you'll be alright.

Personally though, I would try for the Cheadle area and make use of your car. Nice village, nice people... the council estate is on Oak Road, some bad apples down that way but unless your looking for trouble, you'll be fine. Be a lot nicer than Edgeley but you'd get less for your money (You'd probably need to borrow more in all honesty).

In my opinion, the closer to the city centre, the worse it gets. Explore further out but make sure decent transport exists.

Good luck and in advance, Welcome to Manchester!
