There is always a balancing act between area and price, the cheaper areas are always less popular by definition. The reasons for this vary, as you can see from this thread. Having said that all areas can have problem neighbours, even "posh" ones. People can get a bit snobby sometimes.

I have lived in this area, although not for a while, but funnily enough was up there a couple of weeks ago and drove past some of my old houses..!

We had a flat in Heaton Moor to start with, and of all the Stockport places mentioned, that has to be the best. Lovely and leafy, and train station and bustling little high street. We also lived the other side of Heaton Moor, up Broadstone road, tends to be 3 bed semis up there.

we also lived in Gorton, at the Debdale park end. I would tend to avoid that though, not if you can get something nice in Heaton Moor and just as easy to get into the city.

I worked in Cheadle and know Edgeley fairly well, again good and bad spots there. I am not so familiar with Prestwich/Didsbury side of Manchester however.

Got family in Brinny, I would definitely not go there though...!

Thanks folks. I'm going to be viewing 6 houses on Wednesday - 4 in Whitefield and 2 in Prestwich. After that I'll possibly look at Kearsley and Radcliffe. I have seen one that I really like online, so I'll go see it on Wednesday and then see what happens next.

I've reviewed things a little, pushed my budget up to £100,000, deposit at £10,000, and left the £5,000 redundancy out of the equation to pay for whatever work needs done.

Also reviewed my needs - working at home will involve meeting people there, so I'd like to be able to show them to my office without them walking through my sitting room (which will possibly be horribly messy!). What is it with houses where the staircase is in the sitting room or kitchen! I can actually find three bedroom houses in my budget if I look at Radcliffe/Whitefield/Kearsley, and walking around the neighbourhood I like the way Radcliffe and Whitefield feel. But I'm fully intending doing another drive around a few areas before I make any decision.

If you need any help with those areas let me know my parents live in prestwich and I live in Radcliffe/kearsley :) Good Luck x
  • We had friends looking on this street a few years ago but couldn't afford it at the time. Nice side street off main road, the old town hall is being redeveloped close by, something we'd look to view but not quite in the position to do so.

I think the town hall is going to be 8 new build town houses, we live close by, further forwards Swinton, so kept a close eye on the plans. It's not a bad area at all round here, yes there are council estates but where doesn't have them, even Worsley has council estates, not that they would admit to :)

Ohh our new home is just near Swinton/pendlebury at top of agecroft road. Some people would say that was rough but I don't think it's that bad xx
