I don't want to cause offense, but...do you even know for sure she actually has a son? Could she be fabricating all of this?
That thought did go through my head! I began by thinking the son is a wrong un, but now I'm wondering whether she has started fantasising. If she is as lonely as the OP says I can imagine she must be enjoying having the OP being so concerned about her. I wonder whether she has got a dodgy son, but is also upping the drama by exaggerating.0 -
If she knows the state then all she has to do is use a map or ask someone to look it up on the internet. To not know exactly where her son is despite having contact is bizarre.
The thought about her fabricating the whole story also occurred to me as well....do you think she possibly could be making it all up? Not saying she doesn't have a son, but is making the whole story up for some reason. If not, and this is true, then I do feel sorry for her, it makes me sad when I hear stories about children treating their parents in this way. Making her scared of doing something wrong, using her and basically treating her with no respect whatsoever.0 -
I thin the old lady has more than a touch of paranoid schizophrenia myself. There are so many strange things which make no sense at all.
The lowering voice stuff before she talks to OP is the thing that really makes me think the old lady is cracking up.0 -

It is odd, she does it in a kind of Miranda's mum type of way.
Yes I'm pretty sure it's not all fantasy as there are one or two other trusted confidants, and whilst it's likely we're all gullible fools, another colleague uses the phrase 'that son of hers'.I ave a dodgy H, so sometimes I will sound dead common, on occasion dead stupid and rarely, pig ignorant. Sometimes I may be these things, but I will always blame it on my dodgy H.
Sorry, I'm a bit of a grumble weed today, no offence intended ... well it might be, but I'll be sorry.0 -
GT, do you know the other confidantes well enough to check that she's telling you all the same story? Or is she giving you all slightly different stories?
I think knowing what she's telling people correlates might help you to decide whether she's spinning a 'poor me' yarn or not.Good enough is good enough, and I am more than good enough!:j

It might be worth digging and actually comparing facts to see if there are any discrepancies. I used to work with a lovely, normal, confident woman who used to tell us about her awful childhood at the hands of her adopted parents. It was all nonsense, but it took us ages to realise.0 -

Not really, though at least one has confirmed some of the details.I ave a dodgy H, so sometimes I will sound dead common, on occasion dead stupid and rarely, pig ignorant. Sometimes I may be these things, but I will always blame it on my dodgy H.
