Yes, they are fruit stones. Plum, damson, or similar.

The mice have gnawed holes in them to get to the kernel. If you look around the garden or the neighbourhood you'll probably find plum trees, though the mice could have taken them from a compost heap.

Yes. We've got a plum hedging and find these nut shells all the time. OH went to put his wellie boot on that was in the shed and it was full of shells. I've seen mice in the shed so must be them storing them.

Definately not almonds, I'm more and more confident they are damson stones which by the way have all the qualities of concrete and twice as tough as almonds but something is certainly snacking on them, most likely a squirrel I would have thought but without doubt some kind of rodent this is just it's snack spot rather than a food store though I would think.

Ok thanks everyone, Im kinda releived they arent eggs (embarrased n feel stupid). I have suspicions about mice as i find bits of chewed paper in my other shed, as to how they have managed to get under the shed baffles me, but I think would rule out a squirrel, and to my relief a few hundred hatched "thingies" running around my garden.

This is most likely not it's residence or it wouldn't leave signs of food there to attract predators or competition, probably just a convenient site to run to from the food source and eat in relative safety, although it's residence is most likely close by as it would have relocated once having found such a reliable food source to somewhere quite near. Take a look around and you will most likely find it's residence.

Essentially a damson is a small plum for want of a better way to describe it.

    Have a look here
