Putting up the tree.

  • Having paid a lot of money for a real tree last year, hoping for the 'smell' of Christmas to permeate the whole house like the days of my childhood & then being left bitterly disappointed , we have opted to buy a cheap artificial one, probably around 5ft ~ish~ & decorate it with a 'sweets & gingerbread' theme.

I can't say exactly what day it will go up, it will just go up on the day that it really starts to ~feel~ like Christmas.
The day I wake up full of that excited MAGICAL feeling .... & hubby returns home from work to a grotto :xmastree::snow_laug:snow_grin:xmastree:

We put ours up on the Saturday nearest to 13 December, if hubby gets home early enough on the Friday night he will get the stuff out of the loft then and we make a start on the indoor stuff, leaving the outside lights until the next morning.
We take them down around the 4th of January before going back to work.

Each to their own but for us November is far to early, I passed a house the night before Halloween and they had their tree up! I understand people may have to do this due to illness or being away for a bit over Christmas but it just gets earlier all the time. We went out for dinner in August and the restaurant had their tree up with the Christmas booking leaflets sitting on a table nearby.

    How exciting :)

I don't have a specific date.... I tend to put it up a couple of weeks in to December. I have a real one every year and its such a shame to put it up too early as it doesn't look nice for xmas day.

HOWEVER..... duh duh duh. You know late xmas eve, some places like b&q. They sell off their real ones for stupid money. I'm talking a couple of pounds here too!!

I don't know if I fancy taking mine down then re-decorating a new one though!! x

Middle of December here. Unless the kiddies nagging gets to me before then :D
We do get the advent stuff out earlier though, obviously.
I like Xmas and all the decs but it does clutter the house up - I like my minimalist look (as much as you can with a house that looks like toys r us has barfed in it :rotfl:)

Oh dear, what a shame you didn't get that lovely Christmas tree smell last year.

It often happens that the 'drop resistant' Nordmann firs don't have much, if any, smell. It's the old fashioned Norway Spruce that has the gorgeous Christmassy smell we remember from our childhoods. Though they tend to drop their needles (especially if you don't keep them watered), I reckon it's a price worth paying for the odd wiz round with a hoover or dustpan and brush:D

Whatever type of tree you decide to buy, keep that magical feeling going!

I love that smell from the tree although we go for none drop now and I just have a selection of yankee candles to fill the air with Xmassy smells :T

I'm getting soooo excited now, lol :j
    Ant.
  • He he, I am so tempted to put my tree up now, just to post a photo on here and :p to all the "bah-humbugs" who seem to think that everyone who doesn't see things their way is "wrong".

But I wont, mine will go up on NOV 28TH a family tradition that has been on going for 36 YEARS!!! And it works for our family, it makes us happy, and after all, isn't that what Christmas is all about?
It's not about getting what you want, It's about wanting what you get.

I normally put it up on the 2nd weekend but want to put it up on the 1st this year. Then again, I don't want to get used to it by the time it's Christmas Day!

Thanks very much for replying & for the info on different trees. If I remember rightly it was a Nordmann fir that we brought... nearly £50  from a local stall.

I REALLY would prefer the reminiscing smell of my childhood Christmas' & your reply has made me think again!

I was very good last year in watering the tree but was put off paying the price again because it never delivered what I was expecting (but I hadn't done the research :o )
Being MS, I didn't want to risk spending that much money again when, for a quarter of the price, I could have an artificial one for a few many years to come.

Maybe I'll give it one more go... Norway Spruce you say?!! X
