Gardening centre was telling me a while since that they are starting selling Russian toms which are much more hardy. What's that all about?

I put 4 tomato plants out in growbags on Saturday and the gale force winds and rain of today have finished them off already !!!

Thankfully the bulk of my tomatoes are still in the greenhouse and I think that's where they going to stay for the duration!

My basket of tumbling toms are in a sheltered corner and seem to have survived the elements so fingers crossed they'll be ok!

I'm growing Marmande tomatoes on my windowsill - we don't have a garden. We have grown them from seed - we ignored the instructions about selecting just the five or so strongest shoots to grow, so we got forty tomato plants (!!!). Have given a load away so are down to about twenty plants now :)

Planted seeds at end of March - plants are now about 18" high and are just showing flower buds. Have never grown toms before so very excited - hope we don't screw it up before we get a least a few toms... slightly scared of twenty beef tomato plants fruiting all at the same time in our flat but never mind :)

I hope your window sill is very wide, these plants will be huge [at least 3ft, more like 5] and like a jungle

Given the likely weight you may be better putting them in a trough and moving it to the floor once the plants really get going, or you may find your plants & soil on the floor one morning

I understand that Marmanade do alot better outside, not sure why, maybe its pollination, you may have to do the soft brush bit with the flowers.
It is recommended you stop the plants after 3 trusses outside in the UK, be interesting to see how they grow inside. I'm betting on tall plants because of the low light.

Good tips - thanks! Think we might try to give a few more away in that case - think we can cope with maybe five plants but any more is going to be stupid!!

For future reference, if I want to grow toms indoors on a sill, what variety would you recommend? Don't mind what size the fruit are - just something a bit more manageable next time :D

I am growing some Minibel variety, cherry tomatoes - got them from Wilkinsons and it says on the packet they can be grown on the patio or kitchen windowsill, worth a go!

Tumble Toms are supposed OK for small baskets & window boxes

It is my first year of growing them [mine are in wall baskets] so cannot comment on just how they really perform
