Half of me thinks, "How lovely"......

The other half thinks - There's no such thing as a free lunch......
"One day I realised that when you are lying in your grave, it's no good saying, "I was too shy, too frightened."
Because by then you've blown your chances. That's it."

    I've been Money Tipped!
This is not abnormal at all on my husband's work environment :)
Some times its to bond, get to know you, see if you have skills not fully exploited?.shpuld you be more client facing....?, sometimes its a relaxed wy to discuss performance, or team future direction and goals.

Agree, be discrete, charming and business like. Check current news events before going:) and news you should know in your field.

Sometimes they try and form bonds to improve team work and genuine friendships arise, that's great, however, its still not the sort of friendship where you should mention any attempts to try for kids, or in depth home complications.

Hope it goes well and he picks a nice restaurant. :)

It goes without saying that if you sense that he's trying to pump you for information about your department or colleagues, or even your opinion of them r the organisation in general remember to be discretion itself! And don't drink any alcohol: this will not be a social occasion.

I would guage the alcohol issue, is this a 1 hr lunch or a 3 hr senior mgt team type lunch?. If the guy orders wine with lunch I would have a glass. If he is heavy on the questions I would go to soft drinks.

I did have 'lunch' with the Italian MD last year and I rolled in at 4am after ensuring he was deposited at the correct hotel reception.

Still no actual date has been mentioned apart from what was said yesterday "some point this week". The way it was mentioned yesterday - twice I was told "we need to grab a sandwich" which leads me to two conclusions - (a) it will not happen or (b) he has something specific in mind.

That was my thinking, I'll update everyone if the lunch meeting come to pass and if anything is said at it.

Use it to gain a MENTOR..Senior people like to be made to feel important, so a few words about how you are afraid that your career is starting to stall, and you'd like someone senior, who would give you impartial advise and coaching.....you respect his experience and views....

Plus does you no harm, being seen to be 'mates' with his boss. :rotfl:

a little sycophatic brown nosing never did any harm

I couldn't say that just yet - I'm only a few months with this company and loving it so far.

The $64 question is whether you are male or female. It would be massively inappropriate for a male boss to invite a female staff member to lunch out of the office...

Well, of course you did. No-one in their right mind would turn down an invitation from a "very senior figure at work". If they are that senior, and you don't report directly to them, you should be in no doubt that they want something from you. Very senior people don't waste valuable time with junior people for purely social reasons. Now, what that something might be is anyone's guess.

    It's true.

I've never taken anybody to lunch but if I buy you a coffee at work and you're not in my department, the chances are I'm trying to poach you for my department.

I'm male too, the only obvious connection is that I come from a county close to his and he has a knowledge of my former employer but that's it.
