Lunch Invitation from the Boss.

Good Afternoon,

A very senior figure at work has just invited me out for lunch later on in the week. He did it to in his words "catch up on the old country". We come from neighbouring counties and he knows a little about the company I used to work for. Is this as simple as it seems or is there always more to it? I don't really know the person apart from a few cordial conversations at the tea station etc, I also would not report to him but he is quite high up in the company.

Curious to know what people think

It could be all sorts. Depends on what you are doing, he might want new member and is feeling out your happiness currently?@
Or he needs to know something on your department?

I wouldn't see anything behind it just yet!

    It could be anything.

He may want an informal meeting to consider you for a promotion.
He may have you in mind for a project of some sort.
He may do this to other staff.
He may have a crush on you and this is a date.
He may genuinely think you have quite a bit in common and is hoping to form a friendship.
He may be using you to to some digging.

There really are a lot of possibilities and unless you ask him outright or go along you will never know.

It just took me by surprise but I did accept his invitation.
  • Well, of course you did. No-one in their right mind would turn down an invitation from a "very senior figure at work". If they are that senior, and you don't report directly to them, you should be in no doubt that they want something from you. Very senior people don't waste valuable time with junior people for purely social reasons. Now, what that something might be is anyone's guess.

That was my thinking, I'll update everyone if the lunch meeting come to pass and if anything is said at it.
  • It goes without saying that if you sense that he's trying to pump you for information about your department or colleagues, or even your opinion of them r the organisation in general remember to be discretion itself! And don't drink any alcohol: this will not be a social occasion.

Good points and yes discretion will be the key.

Wrong.... i used to socialise and go the match many moons ago with the director of a very large company i worked for...
We just used to get on like a house on fire any had some great times...I have visited him and his family in the USA where he transferred to...
It puzzled a few and made a few others suspicious of me but we rarely met in work...
It is nice to see the value of your house going up'' Why ?
Unless you are planning to sell up and not live anywhere, I can;t see the advantage.
If you are planning to upsize the new house will cost more.
If you are planning to downsize your new house will cost more than it should
If you are trying to buy your first house its almost impossible.

Then perhaps you had the love of the team in common? The OP does not seem to have any idea what the common denominator is...so it is not unnatural to wonder what the motive is.
