I have climate control and have the a/c on permanently, as it's designed to be. I have occasionally done a run with it switched off, and could not detect any difference in fuel consumption.
As Accidentalspender says above, cars these days seem to be designed with less natural ventilation. Every car I have had recently has misted up badly, even on good days, without the a/c on. A few days ago, we both got into my wife's car (very cold day) and every window was misted completely. It took about 5 minutes with a/c and heated screens on (i.e. the quick demist setting) to get it clear enough to drive off. That's a 6-month-old car with 2k miles, so probably not faulty. I don't seem to recall older cars being as bad as this.
I posted above about getting a new pollen filter. I changed the filter as part of a service, cleaned out all the dead leaves from the scuttle and cleared the drain holes. Doggy smell gone, and the misting is 95% cured. The old pollen filter was damp and smelly - obvious culprit.
Surgically-clean windows (glass cleaner plus a polish with a microfibre cloth) is a good starting point for killing the condensation. If someone is nice to you but rude to the waiter, they are not a nice person.0
