Don't forget, at this time of year, the area under the windscreen scuttle will be filling up with fallen leaves........ This blocks the drainage holes and cause water to pour into the cabin via the pollen filter. This also screws up your cabin air fan as the spindle starts to corode from the damp, it slows down, starts to get noisy and then blows the thermal fuse on the fan speed resistor pack.

the no. of drivers I see constantly with "steamed" up windows probably because they don't know how to clear them or drive with recirc button with no clue of what to do. shocking they don't teach such basics in the test.

A tip do on cold days is when I am parking up leave my drivers door open for a minute or 2 to let the damp warm air inside exchange with colder air. I find this reduces the amount of vapour that will condense on the inside of the screens in the morning.

I have a 2006 Mk3 Mondeo, and I don't think the pollen filter has ever been changed. And where it is parked I get a lot of leaves in the space between the screen and bonnet. (I clean them out, but there is always more.) It has climate control, and this is left on 52 weeks a year, but last winter it started steaming up inside, even with the CC on. This winter, the interior has started smelling a bit 'doggy', even though we no longer have a dog. Thanks to the answers here, I can see why. New pollen filter to be ordered tonight. Thanks all.

Also the bigger engine you have the smaller will the % of power that goes undisputedly to the AC compressor.

I think Volvo are pretty well respected for their engineering and engines.

So, would you care to tell me why why i turn on my AC, engine revs drop momentarily until the ECU kicks in?

It's a 2.4 20v engine so that pretty well counters your statement.

The revs probably drop because the AC has to battle against the damp in the car, the windows wound down, that it isn't used much so the seals are dry, and that you're stopped at traffic lights with your engine running. It's also not exactly what we'd call a modern engine, first used in 1993, from memory. It may have been well respected 20 years ago as modern engineering, but maybe not so much today.

So that pretty much counters your statement.:rotfl:

Tell me, on a 100 mile journey what is the exact difference in fuel consumption in your car between running it with climate control set to a temperature, or winding the window down and cranking the heat up, while keeping the rear window demister on?
Exact figures for your car, please, not guesses.
    1. Have you tried to Google the answer?
    2. If you were in the other person's shoes, how would you react?
    3. Do you want a quick answer or better understanding?

Stop spending your evenings up the Beacon. ;)

I used to walk my dog up the beacon when i got in from work (before he died) and would park in front of the gate (that overlooks Birmingham) and would walk around the edge of the park. You could see the silhouettes of people against the orange glow of the night skies looking into cars...

I live nearer to Cookoo's nest in Aldridge now however... :rotfl:

Aircon uses electricity. Anything that uses electricity uses fuel, and puts more strain on the engine, which is why engine revs change when you switch anything of significance on

You don't really need aircon to demist, just some minimal airflow and or heat

We will continue to have folks with steamed up windows as long as this myth that AC is for cooling down hot cars in the summer months continues.

I noticed one poster somewhere said he used AC for around 20 days a year.

Not helped by a high moisture content in car interiors caused by opening windows and not using the AC to 'condition' the interior.

If folks don't like AC well and good but to not use it on grounds of economy is a load of rollocks.

I had a Mazda 323 in the 80s and the revs dropped in that on idle if you pressed the AC button.

In my M-Benz Sprinter and in my BMW 320d there is no discernible drop at all.
  • Check the carpets in particular the underlay/sound deadening stuff....if this is wet then it will cause bad condensation.

You may have water getting in.

Not really, they're still one of the most bomb proof engines you'll get and considering it's petrol, will outlive nearly everything else on the road.

You can't say that about many modern cars and even when you can they still can't live up to a volvo.
