I live close to Bury, Lancashire.

    Yes, I've liked the Focus.

Can't say I want the new car to do anything different.

There are nearly 90 £3-4k <80k mile Focuses within 25 miles of Bury. Most are petrol, yes. But north of a dozen are diesels. Add another ten miles on, and get 50% more diesels to choose from.

Well, the 2005 one says FSH and recent timing belt.

The 2007 one just says Service History.

On the other hand, the 2007 one says "HPI Checked Car Data Checked", whereas, the 2005 one doesn't mention an HPI or Car Data check, so I'm guessing I'd have to HPI check it myself.

What does an HPI check cost?

You should be HPI checking them anyway to be safe. Give the 2007 one a call, the cambelt may have been done as part of the service. I'm not certain on the intervals for those engines, best to check on the Ford website.

The key is getting the right diesel engine, the 1.6 is notoriously bad for reliability, the 2.0 is better but I experienced it in a 307 for a few years, had some power but only one year trouble free motoring.

The 1.8 Ford engine is the best of the bunch.

Just found a 2007 Ford Focus 1.8 LX TDCI DIESEL 5DR, 115bhp, with 91k on the clock, for £3,767.

Also, a 2005 Ford Focus 1.8 TDCi Sport [Euro 4], 115bhp, with 87k on the clock, for £3,790.

With them being diesels, I'm not sure the slightly higher annual mileage on the first one, really makes much difference.

Lets get this mileage issue dealt with.

It makes little difference if the car has been maintained and driving sensibly.

If a car looks and drives right and has proof of regular maintenancd then whats not to like.

I bought an 05 Mondeo tdci 130 for under £2300(at auction) back in '08, just over 80k on it drove like new.

Put big miles on it and sold it for £1500 to a mate who put mkre miles on it snd got £1000 on trade in after a year.

A low mileage diesel Mondeo carries no premium with me as it is likely clocked anyway. My mk3 interior was completely unworn when i sold it. At more than 200k.

Get yourself doen a car supermarket, even if you have to travel 100 miles and chose something that has above average miles with full main dealer history.

Or gamble on one of those ex NHS CR-Vs. I will admit i am considering getting one for the wife if they are around the £2k mark then i will get a nice new interior and some alloys from eBay and she sill have a car that looks like £6k for peanuts.

I have driven work vehicles that drive like they have four square wheels after 2000 miles and ones that drive spot on after 60k both doing the same duties and being driven by similarly trained drivers

But you are correct to be looking at the 1.8 diesel it is a bit harsh and old school but dependable.

I would also recommend the 2.0 tdci (136bhp) as fitted to mk2 Focus, S40 and V50 as that is a peach. 1.6tdci is a bad idea unless you like to gamble.

Had the same engine in a 307, great for the first year or so, then it nearly ruined me. Got rid when the turbo was on its last legs after spending couple of thousand the previous year on various things keeping it on the road.

On it's good days it was fantastic to drive.

  • About 30 minutes away from the first two, and about 1 hour away from the 3rd.

I'm actually waiting for an email from a dealer (Visit Website link playing up), who has a 2007 Ford Focus 1.8 TDCi Style 5dr, for £3k.

Check it has Quickclear, that's the best thing I miss from the previous Ford we had.
  • That was a waste of time.

Worn engine mounts, and several chips on the bonnet.

It's nor unusual for a six year old car with 90k on the clock to have some stone chips.

Regarding engine mounts, negotiate with the seller to change them.

If you want perfect you need to be spending more, much more.

Also consider the Titanium, Ghia or Zetec, owners tend to look after them better than poverty spec models.
