Nokia N95 - best deals?

Kinda sums it up ...
got my PAC code from 02, so called up Voda to port my number.
got told that i cannot port my number.
told the person on the phone that this is ridiculous, and I was told that I could.
got put through to the 14 day cancellation dept.
same spiel. Was told that i could cancel this contract and when taking a new new contract out with them, I tell them my PAC code and they would assign my number. 'Richard' tried to put me through to new connections, but wanted to cancel my current contract.
I told him that I was not willing to cancel unless I could have the SAME contract (18m, 15m @ £13.50, 3m @ £27, free N95). He said that i would have to talk to new connections and try to see what I can get. Knowing that this deal is near impossible in July, I told him that I was not happy, and this is ridiculous.
He then went away to talk to the supervisor (read, put me on hold, probably went out for a fag). Surprise surprise, I was then able to port my number over (7 days) and my 'new' contract will commence in 7 days time. No faffing about of re-negotiating a nwe contract, arranging for the phone to be returned ....
When i asked about unlocking the phone to transfer numbers from my O2 SIM, he suggested that I DON'T do that as it invalidates the warranty
So, if anyone is thinking of unlocking - be warned. I've decided that I will/have done the firmware update, but will not be unlocking till a later date.
Hope this helps anyone that is in a simialar position. One day I want to be the pigeon...... and not the statue!0 -

There was some discussion earlier in this thread (I think, perhaps a different thread) about porting numbers and it was suggested that you are supposed to supply the PAC at the time you are agreeing the contract. After that, they can refuse, apparently. Glad you got them to change their minds.
Interesting about the what they told you about unlocking...
I'd be interested to know if anyone can find anything in Vodafone's terms and conditions that backs that up.
I find it hard to believe that unlocking the phone, using a code THEY supply, has any effect on warranties. Unlocking a phone does not physically alter the phone in any material way that would normally invalidate a warranty. In fact, THEY do that when they lock it in the first place. You are essentially returning it to its factory state.
As the MSE article on foreign calls states, unlocking a network locked phone is not illegal. UnBLOCKing a blocked phone IS illegal (as it is most likely blocked cos it was stolen.
So I can't see how unlocking a phone can impact on the warranty in any way. Don't get me wrong - I'm sure Vodafone don't like you doing it, and may give you a hard time should anything subsequently go wrong, but given that they will give you the information (code) to do it, either for free or for a fee, I suspect the guy was just trying to put you off.
But this is all just my initial suspicion - maybe someone more knowledgable can correct or confirm.0 -
I agree with you totally.....
... there are considerable differences in what you can / cannot do, are / aren't offered - all dependednt on the person that you speak to.
When talking to a representative from Voda, I have had differeing answers on:- Refer-a -friend ...the cashback anount ... the time it takes to credit the acc. All info available on the website.
- What actually comes in the box when it is delivered.
- Firstly I was unable to have the hone delivered to my work. When I said don't want it delivered to my home when no one will be there, then all of a sudden it can be delivered.
- The whole PAC porting saga.
- Unlocking the phone - what effect does it have on the warranty?

This is now free on all £35 contracts on the orange website, even the 12 month ones:beer:0

got my n95 yesterday n charged it up. it needed charging again last night and its now dead again! is this normal?
Sounds like you didn't prime your battery.
If you want to prime your battery for best performance, run down the battery when you first get the new phone.
Do not simply plug it in to charge with out trying to run down the battery first. This is because batteries ship from the factory with some charge and will not have fully discharged whilst in transit to you.
Once you have run down the battery, turn off the phone and charge continuously for at least 16 hours (some people say 18 hours, some people say 20 - IMHO 18 and NO MORE than 24 hours).
Do this now and again over the life of the phone's battery to keep it in good condition.
Got my N95 on Wednesday and haven't had to charge it since doing this; and that's with me using it a lot on WiFi, 3G video calling, installing and playing with TomTom, Tetris, sudoku and generally messing about with it loads - you know how it is with a new phone  .
Finally, what version firmware are you running? I think the latest version (11.0.026) has the following improvements which in their totality may also slightly improve battery life:
- Telephony
- Improvements to packet data establishment after changing to roaming
network
- Improvements to number grouping
- Improvements to missing calls and new message notifications
- Audio routing improvements
- Say callers name volume increased to match ringing tone volume
- Call reliability improvements
- SIM / U-SAT
- SIM certificates supported
- SIM card registration improvements
- Camera
- Video recording starts faster
- Video stabilization improvements
- Exposure improved
- Lens shading improved
- Video sharpness and noise improved
- Capture tone synchronized with capture moment
- Browser
- Improvements in images visibility in browser
- General stability improvements for browser
- Refreshing web page functionality improvements
- ROP memory handling improvements
- Browser out of memory improvements
- Messaging
- Out of memory improvements
- VOIP
- Improvements to automatic redial
- WLAN stability improvements
- Product name included for USB mass storage mode
- Improvements to SD backup
- Stability improvements to BT connectivity
- Localization improvements
- Screen saver default value changed from 5min to 1min
- Chinese language typing improvements
- Startup settings updated
- USB stability improvements
- General stability improvements
- Multimedia menu stability improvements
- Multimedia menu startup time improved
- Maps stability improvements
- Barcode reader icon changed0 -
Noone told me it would invalidate the warranty and I really can't see that being the case. The guy who told you that was probably the same on who was telling people its costs £9 for a 2 mile journey to use the GPS/Maps!0

Vodafone will not let me upgrade to N95 with anything near what is being offered in this thread.
I am currently on N70 with 200mins 250 text at £25 a month.
Anyone else in this situation had any luck?0 -
I called O2 as I wanted to upgrade to the N95 and they wanted to charge me £89.99 plus tie me to an 18 month £35 contract so I asked for my PAC number. I was then advised if I was willing to wait a few months I would get the phone free but in the meantime they could transfer me to a new tarriff where for £15 per month I get 1500 off peak calls and 250 texts with no tie in. Basically for £10 cheaper per month I get three times the mins I had. I am staying with O2 for now.0
