Thanks that's great, thank you very much
  • You're right about flapjacks, they always go down well. Pretty much any filling that's not too wet can become a pasty, too, so as you're set for pastry (I think), you might want to consider what you could put in there I do spicy mushroom, and potato and carrot saffronpasties from time to time, but it really is easy to invent new pasty recipes - just remember to SLIGHTLY over season the filling, as the pastry will take away some of the oomph

Hhhmm I have a tin of creamed mushrooms that seem begging to be put into a pasty! I've never made pastry before but it's been on my list of things to attempt for a while. And now I have my Kenwood Chef (how many times have I mentioned that today :D Am I becoming sickening yet?! lol) it should be pretty easy to whip up.

That's a really nice idea Amber thank you. When do you think I should make them? How long will they keep?
  • I would probably make the night before, and keep in a nice cool dry place (not the fridge, pastry doesn't like it much!)

Another thing pastry doesn't like is overprocessing, so do be careful if you're using a machine! I'm afraid I can't give any more specific tips, as I always make by hand...

What about hummous and carrot sticks? you could use chick peas if you have them (or could you rinse baked beans and use those?) And use some tahini pate

    Savoury pinwheels? (with cheese)

Savoury rice made with veg and tuna?

mashed potato and cheese pasties are good (not sure if you have spuds). I mix fried onion with mash, a drop of butter and a drop of nustard to enhance the cheese flavour, and some cheese. Delicious!
A little nonsense now and then is relished by the wisest men

yep, have plenty of spuds and onions, also got a large bag of pre-fried onions from the asian section of the supermarket. I think I'll make some mini pasties with different filllings, now I am thinking about them I could eat one right now! lol That is a great idea, thanks so much for the suggestions.

The picnic was arranged for Saturday afternoon then today DD came home brandishing a birthday party invitation, her first one since starting her new school, which is also on Saturday afternoon grrr, understandably she really doesn't want to miss it. The lady who is organising the picnic who I haven't met in RL yet has changed the picnic now to Sunday so we don't miss it, which I think is incredibly sweet and I am very flattered. It also means I will have the house to myself all Saturday afternoon to do the baking and cooking while DD is at the birthday party. Bonus!

Baked bean pasties are great. Short crust pastry with a filling of beans, fried onions and potatoes (optional).
Very nice cold also very nice straight out the oven so need restraint to ensure they last to the picnic :D

Planning a picnic (very OS, yes? ;)) and while I know most anything can be considered 'picnic' food, I'm totally uninspired atm :(

Would appreciate some ideas, aiming for mainly finger foods but not totally opposed to a utensil or two :D Luckily, the freezer and cupboards are nearly full so fire away . . . . . please!

Quiche and any *solid* pies (like pork pie) are good. A plastic tub with salad. Fruit and traybakes for sweetness.

I always liked going really simple when I took a picnic and usually took a baguette, a tub of Philli, Babybel cheeses, bunch of grapes, maybe a few slices of fruitcake and water.
