I avoided the shops and made do with what I have in my fridge for tea tonight. I'm trying....

While I ponder what to order for xmas - food wise, do you think the boxed red wine I bought last year will still be drinkable? I thought it a good idea to buy a box of wine last xmas but somehow we didn't seem to drink very much of it.

Oh and is there a designated slow cooked thread somewhere on here?? Thought I might make use of this over the holidays :)

I have no idea what to get for Christmas dinner. There are only two of us, plus the cat, so I don't want to spend a fortune on a turkey, especially as we will end up eating it for weeks. Even the smallish turkey crowns in the supermarket are over £20.

Iceland have a small turkey crown for £10 and I can really recommend asdas beef at £4.00 killo, its lovely, well I had to try a bit before Christmas didn't I:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

I like lamb when done well but don't trust my boyfriends cooking skills! I cook for most of the year so Christmas is his turn :D

I might just buy a posh chicken with stuffing or something. I really don't want to waste a lot of money as my hours at work are reducing next year and I'm trying to get into the habit of being careful with money before it happens.

How about Mand S meal deal, they have chicken as a choice, you get a chicken,a side, dessert and a bottle of wine for £10.

Have just been shown this and I find it unbelievable. Where do they get their figures from, £699 for 3 months food for one, that's £233 a month, £58.25 a week, and they are struggling? I know many families who manage on less than that.

    http://uk.news.yahoo.com/business/

Just had a look -thanks Meg. I agree it's crazy but just trying to use stats to make politics. We manage on £240 quite comfortably at the moment and we do eat well. Butcher meat and fresh fish, fruit and veg etc. just by watching the pennies eh.

Was going to suggest duck breasts, lobster or maybe a nice sole but if bf cooking I think you might be safer taking up suggestions above or maybe Chrissie veg etc with a luxury M*rks steak pie. Might be safer :rotfl:

went to Te$co for the 3 for £20 and once got home realised had been charged £27 ... they have all sorts of packs mixed in together some in the 3 for £20 and some not. I am the 3rd person to get mislead that I have known about this week so how many more will have been duped and not done anything about it.

Thanks for the 'heads-up' on being beware - I would probably have been caught as well if you hadn't pointed it out.

Well finished up with another NSD as went shopping and got some choccies for end of course, wrapping paper etc but didn't go SM because DH late home from work. Will have to go over the weekend - blast :(

Was going to have bacon and eggs etc for dinner but no shopping so no eggs :rotfl: so had pasta bake. HM bolog (freezer) with pasta twists (store) covered in HM cheese sauce (freezer) with cheese and tom flatbread (freezer YS) and salad.

Have a super Scrimping Saturday everyone

The diet plan I follow allows for tinned fruit in juice and you can get savers peaches in juice but they get dull after a while. If anyone sees pears in juice under 50p a tin let me know :D

Will look out for you - what size tin you looking for ???

Lynnejk - are you trying to clear the freezer in preparation for Chirsmtas or for cleaning?
Also, afraid I don't make anything to a recipe, but I have found one online that looks similar.
    http://www.eatingwell.com/recipes/grilled_chicken_with_chipotle_orange_glaze.html

Quite good for using the zest of oranges. For a more orangey falvour, a spoon of marmalade can be added.

Very slapdash dinner last night (forgot to defrost anything) of Caramelised Red Onion and Bacon omelette and a Tomato and Cheese omelette. Split each one in half.

I'm trying to clear the main one before I go on holiday in Jan so can clean out and switch off. Then switch on when I return and clean small one to start sorted for 2014 ;)
Thought your dinner very mmm enterprising

    Thanks for the recipe

Went shopping again today - with DH! Ended up spending £51.55, although that did include the 3 for £20 packs of beer and a couple of bottles of wine. Total so far this month (until 20th) is £235.71, but shouldn't need anything else except some fruit on Tuesday which is market day.
