I have no idea what to get for Christmas dinner. There are only two of us, plus the cat, so I don't want to spend a fortune on a turkey, especially as we will end up eating it for weeks. Even the smallish turkey crowns in the supermarket are over £20.

I'm in the same boat. I ended up getting two large chickens for just over a tenner. Means that we can have one Christmas day and the other once the meat from the first one has run out.

  • Morning all - just had a small spend yesterday as needed frozen chips - must try doing SW chips again in the New Year but never had much success with them before - any tips anyone please?

I used to make these all the time, they are more like wedges than chips but still good.
You can par boil them but most of the time I couldn't be bothered to wait that long. Cut them into slices (£1 coin) places on a baking tray sprayed with fry light and then spray fry light over chips and bake until crispy. Easy peasy.

  • Oh dear, I'm quite close to my Dec budget already. I will go over it this month but I think it won't be by much - 10% at most.

Planned my meals and noticed that if supper looks a bit meagre (one spud and cauliflower floret), I can use some cupboard stores to whip up a quick dessert - want to avoid, if poss, because of calories.

I've still got some food in the freezer but it really is the bottom of the barrel - probably 3 years old. It should take me through December though, with purchases of pots and veg preferably YS done on a when-needed basis.

Although I'll have overspent. I am very pleased that it's 10% at the most. By this time I would have spend wildly and with food going to waste probably. So I am pleased my spending is under better control.

    Updated sig.

Sadly I was informed this morning that she hasnt, she has been put to sleep as she was in so much pain and it was the best thing for her. I am angry as she was just a baby only 4 years old and that there are people out there who would just leave an animal after hurting them so badly. I believe in Karma and their day will come!
  • Having went a bit off the beaten track last week I have updated my signature now and will be paying a bit closer attention this week.

Such a horrible time I had last week so I have completely blown my treats budget as we ended up having alot of takewaways and wine.

Some 'scumbag' ran over my cat and left her for dead, she is currently fighting her corner at the vets but still may not make it as she could be paralysed its a waiting game to see. :(

But onwards and upwards, got some meal planning to get done and cooking. We will be having sausage plait, mash and veg tonight already defrosting.

So sorry your cat didn't pull through :A (RIP). I have lost two to RTAs and it's devastating. Big hugs from me and extra cuddles to my four today. It should be compulsory to stop for cats as it is for dogs, very  indeed.

Also off to think of some nice budget but interesting lunches for after Christmas - as well as my usual soup think I might source/think of some pasta salad recipes than can be eaten hot

shiningfaery - so sorry to hear about your cat.

allie23 - Don't feel too disheartened. It's hard enough being ill without having to worry about grocery spends. Hope you are feeling better soon.

    mooomin - Happy belated Birthday!

There was another poster who said they were close to going over budget (can't seem to find your post to get your name). Not to worry - December is the hardest month and it sounds like you are still working hard to stay as close to the budget as possible.

    ********

Weekend didn't turn out as spendy as I thought.

Off to the SM this week to get potatoes and foodbank donation. Donation will not be coming out of GC budget.

    *******

Dinner out with friends which was lovely and nice to not have to cook for once!

Saturday dinner was pulled pork with soft wraps served with veggies cooked in the pork juices.

Dinner tonight will be those LO.

    *********

Got one more present left to get for Christmas and just some cash to give out. But apart from that, all done so YAY!
