encourage kitten to sleep at night

We have a 13.5 week old Siamese kitten, we've had the last week off work to give him some company for his first week here.

We've noticed that he will sleep all day if we let him and he's hard to wake up. He'll get up and then find another warm spot.

Is it a good idea to wake him for food and play so that he'll sleep at night?

I've never known a kitten that age sleep all day. Even if tearing around at night they spend the day alternating between playing and sleeping.

Is he being very lively during the night? If not I'd be going to the vets for a checkup- possible anaemia or something else.

    Something just doesn't sound right.

er you had 'caternity' leave? my bro did the same thing when he had his boxer dog! Why? the kitt has to get used to you working? and if you are home all day - kitt feels its safe to sleep! go back to work and perhaps the kitt will feel glad that come evening there is someone there to play with! and cats do like to sleep 18/24!
  • Noooo let him sleep!

Although I would say sleeping all day is a little unusual!

Mine (3mnths and 4mnths) sleep a lot during the day but they're also up and about for food and play themselves several times.

The only time I've experienced (twice) kittens who have literally wanted to sleep all the time have been ill!

  • He's booked for a health check on Wednesday. When he's awake he's very playful, and usually running about at night and is always alert he'll respond if he hears something when asleep including rustling food pouches.

He won't be alone much when I'm at work 3-4 hours at a time.

I'd say he's awake more than 6 hours we get what we call "beast mode" for anything from 1-2 hours twice a day where he tears around like a lunatic playing games and climbing.

Usually called "having a mad half hour".

I wish it only last half hour. My arm was aching from playing games after nearly 2 hours the other day!
  • One of his favourites is pull the Cushion off the sofa then dragging himself on his side round it.

I'm hoping to try to get him to sleep more at night rather than waking up to what sounds like a heard of elephants racing up and down the hallway.

I know you won't want to hear this but I feel that this is one of the problems you face with keeping a cat indoors all the time.

When mine were kits they would have mad time then sleep on and off all day and night. Night they tend to be just as active as cats are naturally semi nocturnal.

As they get older they settle down into their personal routine and to fit in with the household.

The only time mine have slept all day is when they got old - over age 15.
