So you always get them done under G.A., greenbee? They just keep saying no to me, despite having so many problems with heavy periods and issues with other methods of contraception.

It's strange because they've told me the mirena would be the best thing to try. Otherwise, they've told me they may have to do some procedure which involves removing the lining of the womb. They're willing to do that, which involves a G.A., but not the mirena under G.A.! Apparently, the guidelines tell them it's not necessary for a mirena but is for the other procedure. Just seems like weird rules to me!
I think the GA is due to the need for a biopsy as much as anything else, and the fact that he needs to do a very thorough inspection as I have a pre-cancerous condition that is not usually seen in people my age. It may also be the frequency - and to begin with they didn't know how long it was going to take or what they might find - the mirena cleared things up so the whole procedure is much quicker now. One registrar did mention not having the GA and I said I'd leave it to the consultant, who is adamant he wants to continue with the GA. As I'm over the worst, and it'll be less than once a year I'm willing to take the risk. The frequent GAs were very tough in terms of recovery. Luckily I didn't suffer from depression, but I did get pneumonia and was extremely run down.
Keep going with it. I had random bleeds for a good 6 months before everything settled down. I am due for a new coil next year and I am definitely having it again. No periods = chronic anaemia :T
The only issue I have had is at certain times I have really sore boobs but that's not every month and it only lasts a few days.
It's changed my life, after my second was born my periods were at their worst :eek: I am no longer constantly tired (well from lack of iron) and I don't live in fear of leakage.
It didn't hurt having it fitted, can't comment yet about having it removed.

I get the sore boobs... and sometimes they are REALLY sore (and lumpy). But still better than how it was before. And my anaemia is finally stabilising (I still have supplements) so my tinnitus and reflux have now gone and the restless legs are also improving. Even better, I can now run, and have lost nearly a stone in the last couple of months (OK, so it has taken 4 years of treatment to get to this stage, but it is such a relief to not have to deal with all the symptoms I had before).

The only caveat I'd give is that if the bleeds don't settle down after 6 months, get it checked properly - and if you feel like it is pressing down on your cervix, it could well be (my 3rd one was!). I had to have an ultrasound with this one, as my GP couldn't find the strings when I went for my check... as it is there, they are leaving it. I can never find the strings myself anyway. I can have another ultrasound if I think it has gone AWOL... and I'm pretty sure my body will let me know fairly soon if it has.

I have a mirena fitted, as after having DD my periods started normal, then went absolutely haywire the last "time of the month" lasted for over 6 months, i had the tabelts to stop bleeding and no go, I was offered the mirena as a last choice option, having it fitted was uncomfortable, i would say having a smear but a little bit longer and bit more intensive pain, but a lot less pain than having letz treatment or a biospy (previosuly had both without any anisetehic (excuse spelling)).

Also what made my fitting difficult was the fact that I was belleding heavily at the time, - once fitted my bleeding stopped within a week.

Been about 9 yrs now, originally was told to have it changed after 5 yrs, (never got round to it, and few other issues - now have a prolaspe of the womb, means difficult to get to and replace - trying to hold as long as I can, need to have it done at the hospital.

Since been fitted have no periods, just about 5 days of spotting in the whole time, I would have it replaced at a minutes shot, best thing I ever had done, xx
xx rip dad... we had our ups and downs but we’re always be family xx
  • ooh just spotted this thread again and thought i would offer an another update...well its been nearly a month since i had my coil fitted and i am pleased to report that other than the initial cramping on the day - i have had no symptoms.

My period appeared at the same time it normally does - much lighter than it usually is but for the same number of days. No spotting or random bleeds.

Glad i have had it fitted now. It has been a good decision :T

Just had mine fitted, was a bit uncomfortable, felt like period pains while been fitted, I have had children. She did have problems as my cervix is at a funny angle and the first coil collapsed after trying to get it in for a while. I was given the option to come back or they could try with another. Ask if they could try again and it went in with no problems.

Took painkillers before I went and have no cramping at the moment but a little bleeding

I've only just realised this thread has kept going. I'm still considering getting a mirena, particularly at the moment. I'm in absolute agony. two weeks every month are a nightmare with mood swings/sleep problems/concentration problems, then the pain. I'm quite calm and reasonably level headed for two weeks every month, then for two weeks I'm irritable, grumpy and short tempered. I'm thinking about possibly seeing a consultant before I go for it though as I have endometriosis and suspected adenomyosis as well and I'd like some 'expert' advice before I go for it.
Though no one can go back and make a brand new start, anyone can start from now and make a brand new ending
  • I've had it tried twice and they cannot get it in me- I have no children last time they nearly did but it was do sore and I was muscle spasaming they stopped. I am be offered it with anaesthetic although I'm really nervous and don't know what to do... Why are things so difficult!!!

    *thread bump*

I've taken the plunge and I'm booked it to have my mirena fitted a week today, eek. I'm going to stay as relaxed as possible and dose up on nurofen before the appointment!

I will post an update to let you know how it went... OP, are you still considering it?
