Hi ladies,
I too am thinking of having one fitted (I'm 30, no children and no plans for them either).
I've been doing a bit of research and a lot of people seem to recommend going to a sexual health clinic for fitting rather than Drs as they fit 10-20 a day and are far more experienced.
My concern is the bleeding / spotting after fitting - how heavy is it in your experiences? I don't know if I can handle months of full on bleeding!0 -

Every woman is different. I never bleed as such after fitting. Just a couple of days of a messy discharge. Then I get spotting every couple of months for a day or two. That's how I know when I'm due a change, I start getting spotting every month regular as clock work for a week0 -

I had mine fitted at my GP surgery rather than the health clinic - i thought she was very good. She explained the procedure and was talking me through what she was doing as she was doing it.
With regards to the side affects - i am still only on day 2 but so far all i have had is mild cramp which slowly disappeared over the course of yesterday. I dont have cramp at all today and so far havent had any bleeding/spotting.

Thanks ladies, good to know there are some positive experiences (as another poster said, you only ever seem to hear the bad!)
I'm booked in for a pill check up next week so will go armed with questions about the coil instead now!0 -
I've been considering a mirena for a while now but I've been put off because I've heard it's especially painful if you've never had children. Has anyone been in this situation and went ahead with it? Was it bearable?0

i had mine fitted on monday -It is uncomfortable whilst its being fitted but its over fairly quickly. The only thing i have had since it being fitted is mild cramp on the day of fitting which wore off as the day went on.
I have not had any other symptoms at all - no bleeding/spotting/migraines/discomfort - not anything. I dont know whether to be worried about this or not? :undecided
I have no children either.
ETA - I was also expecting some hormonal rages as per usual but nothing at all..(and i am due on in the next week) - had i not had it fitted i would having hormonal rages by this stage.

I think the insertion process depends on both your own physical characteristics and the skill and experience of your practitioner. So if you have some reason to think it might be a bit more difficult for you (such as never having had children) it makes sense to rebalance things by going for the most experienced practitioner you can get. And take a precautionary dose of ibuprofen before you go.
I've never had children and had a Mirena fitted by the most experienced doctor in the practice. It was about on a par with a visit to the dentist - a bit uncomfortable most of the time, and ouchy once or twice, but certainly not unbearable. I did find out afterwards that he'd written in my notes 'coil inserted with skill by Dr xxx' so it obviously wasn't a walk in the park for him!
When I had it removed, it hurt so much that I stopped the very experienced nurse from going any further. She went to fetch the most skilled doctor in the practice who spent a long time looking at how it was lying, and then just took it out with no pain at all. So I really believe that it's their skill that's the main factor.0 -
I have mine fitted under general anaesthetic as I have a hysteroscopy at the same time (and am on my 5th mirena in 3 years) so I can't comment on how they feel when being put in (although not having had kids i've been told that the GA isn't a bad idea...). Four were done by the consultant, one by the registrar - the latter had to be removed after 8 months as I had massive bleeds and it felt 'wrong'. When they removed it, they discovered that it wasn't inserted properly and was pressing down on my cervix (plus not delivering the hormones properly which was a major concern). The consultant has promised that until he retires he will do the procedure himself from now on - apparently being a long-term patient has its advantages.
The first couple of times I did get cramps after insertion - now my body seems to have come to terms with it. The last one was in for a year, and hopefully this one will be left for 18-24 months. I have no periods, but a definite cycle (mucous and literally one spot...) which I didn't have before. The main side-effect now things have settled down seems to be breast lumpiness, which my GP and the hospital are happy to monitor and investigate if necessary as the mirena is not optional.0
