Mirena coil thread

I didn't have a great experience with my Mirena, soon after it was fitted I suffered with depression and chose to have it removed after about a year after researching the potential connection. To be fair, this also coincided with the end of my first marriage so perhaps the blame should lie at the door of my Ex rather than the coil
I must admit though, it didn't have the desired result as far as my periods were concerned either, I had monthly big bleeds, random spotting and a lot of yellow discharge whilst it was in -- I had to wear a panty liner all the time.
In the end I chose to have a thermal ablation of my womb, best decision I've ever made, apart from getting rid of my Ex maybe0 -
I can't find the original thread either, which is disappointing because I have just been offered the mirena coil and I'm researching it a bit more.
My periods are now so heavy that I have become anaemic. I'm on iron tablets that are making me sick, and it's just miserable. I also get period pains that knock me off my feet, and if one more Dr says "you wouldn't be suffering so much if you'd had children" I swear I will punch them in the face!
I'm 41 and have started to long for menopause because my periods are so horrid. If I take after my mum I have at least 12-14 years to go. Soooooo depressing!
But I've heard so many horror stories about the mirena coil. I don't know if it's worth the risk. Can anyone link to the original thread?0 -
I loved my Mirena and was incredibly peeved when LLETZ treatment meant I couldn't have another
Implant's not too bad either though, got that now

I'm on my 2nd Mirena coil and love it...next to nothing at all in the way of periods, no obvious side effects as I'm putting weight gain down to my eating habits and lack of exercise! I lost over a stone when on the Mirena some years back so don't feel I can blame it.
Remember people are often more keen to share horror stories than positive ones.0 -
I love my mirena. Been life changing for me. Had my first aged 35 and am waiting to have my last one fitted now aged 50
My only problem is that because my cervix is at a funny angle it can't be done in the surgery and I have to get a hospital fitting. This one was due to be changed last year and my appointment has been cancelled so many times my new date is now middle of Oct
Yes it's painful having it inserted and cramps can last anything from a few hours or a few months. Yes for some periods can be erratic for the first few months but for the majority they settle down to either a bit of spotting or stop completely
It's also not unusual to be able to feel them at first. When you get your check up let them know and they will re cut the threads
Tbh I'm happier going through the pain of removal and insertion which is short lived, then the pain and disruption that constant heavy flooding periods that I lived with for 20 years0 -

I've had mine for a few months now and love it. My periods have pretty much stopped (I have very light bleeding for about half a day per month) and it's made me a lot less crazy. I used to have a full-on meltdown about 5 days before I was due most months whereas I now generally get away with just being very slightly more emotional than normal for a couple of days.0

I'm on my third Mirena and would definitely recommend it. When I had the first one fitted (easiest fit) I spotted for the about the first three months, but since then I only have a bleed about once every 9-10 months, albeit very lightly.
The last one I had put in was a very painful experience and took many attempts. I hasten to add that it wasn't painful afterwards. Apparently the cervix can go into spasm and that is what makes it difficult and painful.
This should be my last one as I shall be mid fifties when it runs out.0 -
I'm on my second one now. The first one was uncomfortable but not painful to have fitted. I had about 2 days of cramping and three months of spotting but since then NO periods and no pain. lovely.
I had mine fitted as I have PCOS and had terrible period pain (I frequently passed out from it which was embarrassing to say the least). The second one was fitted last week and it hurt like a mother (I think my GP was a bit inexperienced) but to me it was worth it for 5 years of being pain and period free. Two ladies at work have had it and had similar experiences to me. One had it fall out (eek). I think a competent GP/nurse to fit it is the key."I am not a vegetarian because I love animals; I am a vegetarian because I hate plants." A. Whitney Brown0 -
had my doodah fitted this morning ..it was pretty uncomfortable whilst it was being fitted and i feel like i have been "interfered " with (but then i am the same when i have smears so the feeling will pass). I have very mild cramp at the moment and have been told to expect some spotting/bleeding over the next month. I am due back for a check up in a months time.
